"So You Think You Can Dance" 2009, Results: Final 4 revealed!

By Kathy Laluk on July 30, 2009

Last show before the grand finale and I'm still underwhelmed by this season's dancers. On the plus side, tonight's show featured a number of great performances from several S4 dancers and the Jabbawockeez dance crew.

Group routine choreographed by Tyce to "Send in the Clowns" by Judy Collins. The song was slow and somber, as was the dancing. The dancers emerged from a giant gift box (what is it with Tyce and oversized inanimate objects?) and began dreamily twirling around the stage. There were a few great moments - there was one set of synchronized leaps that seemed to stop time - but on the whole, not a lot of substance to the routine.

Girls results were first. I think Jeanine did well in the samba, but (unlike the judges) I didn't like the hip-hop routine she did. Melissa was barely noticeable last night. She did fine in both her Broadway and quickstep, but her star is fading fast. Kayla was flawless last night. And she's the only one I really want to see win this thing anymore. And the first girl in this year's F4 is ... Jeanine! Of the girls left, she was one of the two I'd like to see in the finale. She's a very solid dancer and even though she's struggled at times, she always, always throws herself headfirst into the routine.

Tonight we got a big treat: performances of the four routines from last season that were nominated for Emmys this year. First up: the contemporary routine choreographed by Tyce to "Silence" from "Unfaithful." Jessica and Will danced it brilliantly. The whole piece just breathed and was unbelievably fluid. Absolutely exquisite. I actually got chills.

Time for the guys' results. Ade was crappy as ever last night (if not worse than usual) in both his routines. Even though Lil C deliberately and blatantly picked on Evan last night, I thought he did a great job in all of his routines (particularly his solo and the guys' group number). Brandon was by far the best of the night though. Like Kayla, I don't think he made a single mistake (well, except maybe those tiny black undies). Based off the cheers alone, it seemed like Ade would be headed home tonight. The first guy into the finale is ... Brandon! He's definitely the strongest dancer of the last three guys. His whole "I'm not confident" act is insanely annoying, but based off of dance talent alone, he deserves a spot in the F4.

Next up, another Emmy-nominated routine from S4: "Mercy" by Mia Miachels performed by Katee (love her) and Twitch (hate him). Katee was fiery, but Twitch was kind of just along for the ride. Poor Katee's 50's do got pretty messed up, but it was fun to see the routine again. It was still way better than majority of the routines we've seen this season.

After a quick commercial break, we got to see Chelsie Hightower and last year's winner, Joshua, performed a tango to "A Los Amigos", choreographed by S2 contestant Dmitry. Chelsie may be shorter than many of the contestants (she's 5' 2"), but her legs go on forever. And girl, she worked it. Legs that move as quickly as hers should be illegal. Amazing. Joshua was almost invisible to me for the first half of the number, but still had his moments (his legs weren't too shabby either). It wasn't one of the most memorable routines from last season, but definitely strong and a pleasure to watch again.

Solo time again. There's almost no point in blogging about these - as I've said the past couple of weeks, the contestants perform the same solos they did the night before. BO-RING. Melissa's was the weakest we've seen from her yet and Ade's was his usual bullshit.

The next dancers were way better though: the Jabbawockeez, who won S1 of "America's Best Dance Crew." These guys have incredible synchronization (the dancers from "SYTYCD" need to take notes) and are amazing poppers. I have a feeling Nigel & Co. brought them onto the show to fill the hip-hop void this season and I'm so glad they did. The routine was chuck-full of some great freeze-frame and slow-mo moments and even some breaking. Their movements are like a cross between a robot and bobble heads. Love them. If you haven't seen them, definitely check them out (I'm pretty sure you can find clips of their performances on Youtube).

Then it was time for the last Emmy-nominated routine from S4: "Bleeding Love" by TabNap, performed by Chelsie & Mark. This was one of my favorites, if not my favorite, routine from last season. The storyline (Mark was a workaholic and Chelsie was his fed-up girlfriend/wife), the music, the popping - all brilliant. And they hit it hard and danced it with more emotion than we've seen throughout all of S5.

Last two solos: I thought this was actually one of Kayla's weaker solos. Most of the movements lacked her usual grace and the routine didn't show off her fabulous extension or center. Still love her though. Evan's solo was actually my favorite last night. It was all his usual charming B'way stuff, but with the addition of a few flips (I had no idea he could do that!) and some lovely pirouettes.

Music guest tonight was Sean Paul. He performed his song "So Happy". His music usually has a decent dance beat (this one does), but I can't understand a word he says. Seriously, I couldn't understand a single word. Hey Mumbles McGee - E-NUN-CI-ATE! Throw in a half dozen scantily-clad backup dancers and you've basically got his performance. The musical guests this season have been pretty pathetic. I hope they get better ones next season.

Results time. Ladies first. I held my breath the whole time. And the last girl in the F4 iiiiiis ... Kayla! YESSSSSS!!! There is still hope for S4! Don't get me wrong, Melissa is an absolutely beautiful dancer and seems like a lovely person, but it was her time to go. I'm glad a ballerina made it so far.

Time for the guys. I might mutiny if Ade is in the F4. Again, I was holding my breath the whole time. And the last dancer in this year's F4 iiiiis ... Evan! YAY! I've disliked/hated Ade from Day 1. His dancing, particularly his technique, is just average to me, and in this competition, it needs to be of a much higher quality. Maybe if he had gotten rid of the pick he would have made it to the F4. ... But probably not.

With the exception of Jeanine (I had Janette instead), I would say these are my ideal Top 4. Kayla FTW, please! She's the only one I'd like to see win at this point. It's probably the most lackluster F4 we've ever had on this show. Sigh... Next week is the big finale, which will hopefully be good. They usually have performances of the judges' favorite routines from the season. Although I think there are far fewer standout numbers for the judges to pick from, there are still a handful I'd enjoy watching again.

Here's hoping for good finale next week and (hopefully) an even better S6!
