"So You Think You Can Dance" 2009, Results: Happy 100!

It was the 100th episode extravaganza tonight and it was nostalgic, but a bit underwhelming for such a momentous occasion. The show kicked off with a Broadway routine to "One" from "A Chorus Line." Since this is one of my all-time favorite musicals, I had high, high hopes for the routine before it began. There were suits, there were top hats and there were even mirrors. And yet, I still felt that it was lacking. There were some nice sharp movements and nice work peeking around the mirrors, which was nice, but absolutely NO kickline. Um, what?! I'm sorry, but if you're going to do something from that musical, especially to that song, a chorus line is practically required. It's the fucking title of the show! I thought it was another stinker from Tyce, but - gasp! - the routine was actually choreographed by Mia. She was definitely off her game with that one.

After a quick recap of the past five seasons, and then a review of what happened on last night's show, it was time for the results. First up were the girls. Melissa was up first and she was safe. She looked totally shocked, but really had no reason to be. After the cancer routine, she had to know she was safe. Just like Mia's routine about her late father with Neil and Lacey in S3, this was another sure vote-getter. Next up was Kayla, who I think did great last night, but managed to land in the bottom. Wow. Just, wow. Down to Janette and Jeanine. I thought Jeanine would land in the bottom - both her routines last night were sub-par for me - but it turned out Janette was in danger.

Next it was time to relive the glory days of Season 3 when Hok and Jaimie graced the stage with the Hummingbird and the Butterfly routine choreographed by Wade Robson to "The Chairman's Waltz" from "Memoirs of a Geisha." THIS is the kind of routine I've been waiting for all season this year. Something that is captivating, different, and superbly danced (and both Hok and Jaimie danced as beautifully tonight as they did two summers ago). The dancers this year are arguably some of the strongest we've seen in terms of technique, but I struggle to think of more than a few routines that stand out this year. It's so disappointing, because the dancers are capable of doing it, but they're just not rising to the occasion.

Anyways, I'll interrupt my bitching for the guys' results. First up were Ade and Jason. I'd love to see Ade in the bottom this week. I can't stand him. The pick, the dopey grin, the weighty style of his dancing - it all just annoys me. But after the cancer routine, I had a feeling he'd escape the bottom 4 again, and he did. That put Jason in the bottom this week, which I can't say I mind. He's a fine dancer, but not spectacular, and his solo last night was WAY weaker than Ade's. That meant it was down to Evan and Brandon, which really put me in a funk. I love both these guys and didn't want to see either of them leave. I thought for sure Evan would be in trouble. The judges have been relentless with their criticism of him, and next to Brandon, whose technique is arguably the best of all the guys left in the competition, it's an unfair contest. But Brandon landed in the bottom this time. Again, wow. Turns out Evan's voting bloc is stronger than I thought.

Then Travis and Heidi came back to perform the park bench routine from Season 2 choreographed by Mia Michaels to "Calling You" by Celine Dion. Now, I never saw this routine live (my addiction with "Dance" started with Season 3), but I can certainly see why it won an Emmy. Great use of the bench and stage, interesting leaps and just brilliantly danced. I agree with Eric though, Travis needs to dye his hair back. He looks terrible as a brunette.

Solo time. Again, it looks like they're just performing the same solos they did the night before, which is such a cop-out. I don't know if that's the producers' doing or the dancers', but I hate it. The solos this season have been weak to begin with and I certainly don't need to see them two nights in a row. Although Brandon's was, once again, by far the best. Boundless energy, great spins and leaps, and seven (eight? nine?) flips at the end - it was exactly what it should have been: dancing for your life.

Then it was time for another memory of "So You Think You Can Dance" past when dancers from S2 performed "Ramalama" with choreographer Wade Robson. The period zombie costumes, odd "Thriller"-esque movements, and quirky Roisin Murphy song all worked perfectly together. I forgot how much fun that routine was to watch.

Then it was time for this week's musical guest: none other than dancing sensation (kidding) Katie Holmes. The first part of the number started in familiar territory for Holmes - a movie of her singing "Get Happy" on a set reminiscent of one from "Singin' in the Rain"  - but then it shifted to the stage. And that's when things got really bad. Armed with a band of 15 or so backup dancers and no microphone (I thought she was supposed to be "singing"?), she muddled her was through a back-to-basics Broadway routine choreographed by Tyce. It was pathetic. She lip-synced, she flailed around the stage (when she wasn't being lifted by her backup dancers), she completely tanked. We're talking Ashlee Simpson on "SNL" levels of suckiness. For something that was supposed to be a tribute to Judy Garland, it was downright insulting. Hell, even Sean Kingston and Kristinia DeBarge were better musical guests than Holmes was.

Results time. Ladies first. It was between Kayla and Janette, both of whom I wanted to see in the final four, but apparently that wasn't going to happen. I'm sure Eric was holding his breath while they made us wait, but he can breathe easy. Janette went home tonight and Kayla was safe for another week. Nigel said Janette was his favorite dancer and that he thought America got it wrong. Can't say I disagree.

Time for the boys. Between Jason and Brandon, I thought for sure Jason would get the boot, and I was right. He was a great dancer (they all are at this point), but it was his time to go. Of the boys we have left (aside from Ade), he's the weakest dancer. I'm sure we'll all miss his shirtless performances, though. I know I will.

So there you have it. The good, the bad, and the downright ugly. Happy centennial "SYTYCD." Here's to another 100 episodes!

So that Katie Holmes bit was a joke. She didn't even dance and her voice was only passable. Oh, and I'd say it's par for the course that Tyce choreographed/directed that piece of shit. Look up the word hack in the dictionary, he'll be there. I also don't know what they were doing by trying to convince us that it was a live performance. What was with the bowing at the end? There was nobody there watching them. What a let down and a total tease.

Yeah, Bob is right...What a total joke that was. I found myself wondering half way through it, why they were trying to convince us it was live instead of pre-recorded too. They really should have just brought back a 4th routine from a previous season!

Oh, and for the guys...why the hell was Evan safe AGAIN! - If he ends up winning, I will give up on this TV show. Between Twitch winning last year, and Evan still not going home, I'm beginning to think the people who call and vote are either blind or on drugs.

Here's to hoping he goes home before the Final 4.

Just a quick correction, Tommy: Twitch didn't win last year, Joshua did. And thank god for that. Twitch came in second, which was ridiculous given how mediocre he was almost all season long. Score one for the mugging department, I get.

As for Evan, although I dearly love him, I agree that at this point he's definitely overdue for a trip to the Bottom 2. He's never bad, but he also rarely commits fully to his performances. However, between him and the remaining two guys, I hope he at least makes it to the end of the show. Have never been a fan of Ade, and while I respect Brandon as a dancer, I'm not really a fan of his personality.
I said earlier in the season that we this year gave us our strongest overall Top 10, and I stick by that. But after last night's eliminations I am VERY worried that we're going to get our weakest Final 4. I like Jeanine and Melissa, but I can't believe they're still in this competition. Kayla FTW.

Evan has been terrible the last 2 weeks...I was shocked he wasn't in the bottom. I have to agree with Tommy and say I hope he goes home next week. I think Ade has grown throughout the show, while Evan has slowly dropped off each week. GTFO Evan.

hahahahaha

Whoops...I dont know what I was thinking - I stand corrected.

But yeah, I agree, this has been an AMAZING top 10, but it seems like the top 4 will be a little underwhelming. I'm still rooting for Kayla for the win. From a technical, and entertainment point of view, she has yet to disappoint me!

Missed most of this week as work more than beckoned! Was able to watch Wade Robsons' # and totally agree: THIS is dancing. Shallow,. I know....but I am happy that Katie blew it. I dont; think America is getting it right with the final 4 either. My vote is for Kayla!!

i personally feel that for shows like this, the last word should be from the judges only, after all most regular people voting don't even know what a real tango is supposed to look like and this are the idiots voting. no i'm sorry this is becoming a popularity contest and i think is very unfair for people that are doing things right and they are good at it. VERY ANGRY AT THE LAST SHOW.(not the only one).
