"So You Think You Can Dance" 2009, Top 12: Pipe down, English Muffin

Tyce DiOrio was on the judging panel. At least that meant we were spared one of his terrible Broadway numbers. Each of the remaining six couples had to dance two different numbers in order to fill the TWO HOURS of running time. Why not just go to one hour? Oh, because it's Fox, and that network has nothing else to air over the summer. Bah.

Melissa and Ade, disco by Doriana Sanchez to "Move On Up" by Destination.  THE PICK, ADE! Gawd. It didn't seem as tight as Brandon and Jeanette's number a couple weeks back. Melissa in particular seemed sluggish to me. Her outfit and hair were fabulous. Ade actually impressed me quite a bit this time around. His lifts were incredible - and there were so many of them --- and he had a lot of flash and sass. Melissa literally fell over at the end. Was it bad? No. Was it as good as Janette/Brandon's disco two weeks ago? Sorry, nope. But a decent disco number. Love that style of dance.

Kupono and Kayla, contemporary by Mia Michaels to "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles. Loved the costuming, very shredded and industrial. It was very salacious in parts, like when Kupono ran his face all over Kayla's body and leg. The two of them danced the hell out of the number. Kupono not only danced strongly, he was downright creepy. Kayla emoted BEUATIFULLY in her portions. The whole thing was about addiction, and it was brilliantly rendered. One of the best numbers of the season, I think. Another Emmy for Mia Michaels? They stayed on the Hot Tamale Train!

Caitlin and Jason, foxtrot by Tony Meredith (and Melanie!) to "Minnie the Moocher" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Caitlin's dress was gorgeous, although the hem of the silver part made her look hippier than she is. The whole 20s look suited her overall though. Jason looked great, as usual. But he does play to the crowd too much, and he didn't dance it as strongly as I would have liked. I thought Caitlin really pulled them through that routine. It looked like they biffed the complicated lift move at the end.

Jeanine and Phillip, kalinka (Russian folk dance) by two choreographers whose names I cannot spell, to basically the Tetris theme. Phillip was DREADFUL, although Jeanine really pulled off the opening sweep. The costumes were adorable. Parts of it were simple, but they couldn't even keep it together. Jeanine was a whirling dervish. Phillip did pull off the crouched leg shoots, so I give him credit for that. But it just wasn't good. Nigel critiqued the choreography itself, saying it was too "folky." I though the judges were way too kind to Phillip. Any other guy on this competition could have made that routine MUCH better.

Randi and Evan, hip-hop by Tabitha and Napoleon to "Halo" by Beyonce. The concept was that Randi is pregnant, and Evan is proposing to her, and it worked really well despite the kind of outrageous topic. They hit the routine hard, especially Randi. They were together the whole way through. There were some really cool moves, including Evan using his arms to circle the entirety of Randi's body, with her extremities fully out. Some cool lifts, too. The judges liked it. I'm glad. This is probably my favorite couple of the bunch. Tyce called Evan out on needing to "find more," which is a useless critique. However, I kind of get where he's coming from. I always think Evan is good, but I also feel like he holds back quite a bit.

Brandon and Janette, Argentine tango by Miriam Larici and Leonardo deMarco to "Libertango" from Forever Tango. Janette looked amazing, so sultry and with incredible footwork. I barely looked at Brandon for the first half of the routine. Then he came alive with some fantastic lifts and footwork. But I will say this: it was supposed to be sexy and seductive, and while technically brilliant, it lacked passion, at least on Brandon's part. Janette gave it everything she had, but I didn't feel any heat from Brandon. The judges gave them a standing ovation. That was a bit much. Tyce went into this terrible metaphor about orange juice. Mary put them on the train.

Melissa and Ade, waltz by Ron Montez (note that Alex de Silva is nowhere to be seen this year; I wonder if that's because of his legal troubles) to "Natural Woman" by Mary J. Blige. It was beautiful, flowy, gorgeous. Both of them were spectacular. Melissa always makes everything look so easy, but Ade really surprised me with his several amazing spins. Great, lovely number. Judges loved it.

Kayla and Kupono, Broadway by Joey Dowling to "The Dance at the Gym" from "West Side Story." Kayla was fantastic. She just throws every inch of her body into everything she does. Kupono just seemed to be along for the ride to me. The musical selection left me cold. It was too discordant, and the ending came so abruptly. Nigel said that while they danced the number, they didn't dance the STYLE, and that they lacked contraction. I can see that; if you look at "West Side Story," all the moves were so powerful and dangerous, and that was lacking.

Caitlin and Jason, lyrical jazz by Mandy Moore to "Show Me Heaven" by Maria McKee. Jason was shirtless again; that's a good start. I'm not sure how this style differs from contemporary whatsoever. That said, it was a really cool number, and the two of them danced the SHIT out of it. It was remarkably together, especially given how far apart the two of them were for so long. Some really sharp kick moves, and a really romantic piece. Nigel said they danced it technically brilliantly, but he didn't see chemistry. I saw some chemistry. But I do think that Jason plays too much to the audience, to the disadvantage of his partner.

Jeanine and Phillip, jive by Tony Meredith and Melody to "Stuff Like That There" by Bette Midler. Jeanine looked insanely hot. I figured they would be terrible, but it really wasn't that bad. Jeanine was clearly leading the couple. Phillip mostly kept up, but he has some goofy faces when he he's concentrating.  I prefer the Evan/Randi jive from a few weeks back, but that was a super fun number. More jive, please! Nigel said it was the best Phillip has danced out of his style, and I think that's probably true, but that's not saying much. He also said Jeanine was fabulous, and she was. Jeanine was put on the Hot Tamale Train!

Randi and Evan, samba by Pasha and Anya from Season 3 to "Ritmo de Bom Bom" by Jubabba. The routine strated out FIERCE with a wicked cool flip throw thing.. I can't explain it. Loved Randi's leapoard print outfit. Randi was very sexy, but Evan doidn't quite live up to his half of the bargain, and made some really uncomfortable faces. While I enjoyed it, the whole thing felt a little uncomfortable and clumsy at times. Randi was a star on the stage. Never thought I would love her the way I do. Nigel said it wasn't as hot as he would have liked it. Mary referred to it as a "slow sizzle." Randi was also on the train!

Janette and Brandon, jazz by Wade Robson to "Ruby Blue" by Roison Murphy. They were apparently playing burglars, which came through completely. Wade referred to the movements as cartoonish, and that's right. It was very sharp and frenetic. It was...so very strange. Like all of Wade's routines. But it was fun, and it was interesting, and I really liked it, and they danced it quite well. Nigel suspected that they would get the biggest vote of the night. He may be right there, as both of their numbers were fantastic. Nigel and Mary both mentioned how good Janette is, and I agree. I had dismissed her in the beginning, but she's really a strong contender, good in every style.

Predictions for tomorrow night: Since half the couples will be in the bottom, and nobody was really bad, it's going to be a tough call. I think Caitlin and Jason will be there by default, I think Evan and Randi will probably end up there for the first time, and I think Phillip and Jeanine will probably round it out, but it could also be Kayla and Kupono. I just don't see Ade/Melissa or Janette/Brandon in the bottom.

Missed the first half hour...so, I didn't bother writing down thoughts. Overall...Janette/Brandon were totally hot. Hated the Russian #, embarrassed for Evan doing the Samba. What was Tyce on....he was so pleasant!

This show had it all. Great dance and great entertainment. Mary Murphy was on the train herself with all the ridiculous comments. "Pipe down English Muffin" - instant classic and made me LOL.

As far as the dance...Jannette and Brandon were on fire. Both of their numbers were the best of the night. Jeanine danced the crap out of that jive, and Phillip, was well, Phillip. Evan was kind of dull last night, he didn't bring as much energy as he should have, luckily he has Randi dancing next to him. Kupono and Kayla did okay, but didn' t really impress me. I think they'll be in the bottom 3 again. Melissa and Ade danced well again, I think they'll be safe. Caitlin and Jason were okay. I wasn't really excited for either of their dances, but didn't think they were terrible. I see them in the bottom 3 as well.

Who's going home:
Guys -- Phillip or Kupono. Phillip isn't strong enough to hang with these dancers we have left. Kupono may go home due to his weak solos the past couple weeks.

Gals -- Hard call. I really don't want to see any of them go. They all have strengths. Will it be Caitlin by default, since the judges are up Kayla's ass and Mary said there was no way Jeanine was going home? Hmm...
