“Dance Your Ass Off”: The Final 3 revealed!

So nobody went home last week, which left us with four contestants in the semi-finals: Alicia, Pinky, Ruben, and Shayla. I was actually thrilled when they announced the non-boot, because it was coming down to Shayla or Pinky, and neither of them deserved to go home based on their performances that week (or any week, for that matter).

This week, the Final 4 got makeovers and did a photo shoot for Life & Style magazine. None of the makeovers were at all drastic - no big haircuts, no color changes, anything like that - but they all looked incredible. I'm so pleased for all of them. As someone who's currently trying to shed a few pounds, it's great to see people succeeding and enjoying their success. (Sorry for the moment of humanity; I promise it won't happen again. Bile engines engage!) Then a ballroom champion came in and gave them lessons, which I'm sure was very exciting for them, but pretty boring for us. I know Mary Murphy, y'all. Top that.

First up, Shayla did the cha-cha to "Gimme More" by Britney Spears. She looked great in a gold zebra print dress. She was quite sexy, and honestly, I don't think she has any more weight to lose. She looks like a star; gorgeous, gorgeous girl. Her movements were sharp and seductive. She got a well deserved 9.7 average! Yay.

Then Alicia, who is having a bit of an identity crisis after her weight loss - she's gone from a size 20 to a size 16. That's just amazing. I also give her credit for recognizing that this is a process, and she still has plenty of work ahead of her. She did a Viennese waltz to "The Trouble with Love Is." She is getting better every week, there's no question. However, her dancing still lacks fluidity. I'm impressed by some of the moves she pulls off - the crouched spin, for example. But technically she is nowhere near the other remaining contestants. It's just obvious when you compare the routines one after the other. She got a dance score average of 7, which is a lot closer to reality than she's been getting in recent weeks.

Then Ruben did a cha-cha to "Waiting for Tonight" by Jennifer Lopez. His mugging has actually been annoying me more than Alicia's in recent weeks. His dance faces are fucking ridiculous. He's obviously a very strong male partner, and his footwork is good - he's surprisingly agile for a guy who is still as big as he is. He got an 8.7 average.

Pinky did her waltz to "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain. The singer, by the way, was horrendous, the worst this show has ever had, and it's had some really bad vocalists. It actually distracted me from the dancing. Not to make light, but that guy should be fired immediately. The routine itself was quite lovely. Smooth, nice rise and fall, very sweet. It felt a little junior high prom - they looked a touch juvenile - but it was a nice piece, even with that weird long pause in the middle. She got a 9.7, which I think is her best score to date. Yay Pinky!

For her second dance Alicia's cha-cha'd to "Can't Get You Out of My Head" by Kylie Minogue. It looked so sloppy compared to Shayla's cha-cha earlier in the show. Tons of energy, sure. And Alicia was having fun. But her arms were all over the place. There was nothing hard or sharp about it at all. The judges were WAY too kind to her, and this is what annoys me about this show: the scoring is so inconsistent. She got the same fucking score as Shayla got in her cha-cha! Play those side by side and I ask you: was that the same level of ability on display? Absolutely not. Alicia lost 3.5 lbs, which equaled 1.6 percent of her body weight. Alicia has been killing it in the weight loss portion of this contest, and that's why she's doing so well. But the judges' excessively high scores for her mean that a mediocre (at best) dancer could very easily make it to the finals when one of the other legitimately good dancers could go home. It's bullshit.

For Ruben's waltz he got "Ordinary Day" by Vanessa Carlton. You could see all of his concentration all over his face. It did not look easy whatsoever; in fact it looked quite labored in parts. It also lacked any kind of rise and fall. The judges again were ridiculously effusive and gave him a 9.7. The scoring on this show is a MAJOR PROBLEM and it needs to be addressed if/when it comes back for a second season. Ruben lost 7.1 pounds - not a surprise since he was in the bottom two last week - which put him at the top of the leaderboard, and automatically into the finale. Fine with that. I'm not a fan, but Ruben should be in the finals. He was the best male dancer, and he has turned in some really good performances.

Pinky's cha-cha was to "Just Fine" by Mary J. Blige. She was spicy! However, the moves were not sharp, especially the footwork. It lacked focus at first, although it got much better toward the end when she made her passes. It was fun, but still couldn't touch Shayla's cha-cha. She lost 1.9 pounds, which is 1.17 percent of her body weight. She's lost a total of 25 pounds, which for a girl that short is pretty impressive.

Shayla's waltz was to Alicia Keys' "Fallin'." You know I love her, but I thought it was Shayla's weakest performance to date. There wasn't a ton of content in the dance. The judges basically said that technically the moves were well executed, but it lacked passion, and I agreed completely. She lost 2.1 pounds, which was 1.19 percent of her body weight. She's lost 31.6 pounds since the beginning. I think the issue here is, Shayla doesn't have much more to lose. And that could ultimately hurt her in the end.

So Bottom 2: Shayla and Pinky. In danger: Alicia. Shayla got an average of 9.2 for her waltz, which put her in second place. THANK GOD. Not her finest showing tonight, but she totally deserved to be in the finals. I would frankly be pissed with the show if she hadn't made it. Pinky pulled a big enough final dance number to end up in SECOND, which means that she's going to the finale, and Alicia went home. WOW. Didn't see that coming, the way the night was going, what with the inflated second scores.

That means that the three best dancers on the show since pretty much the beginning made it to the finals. The only other person I could have seen there would have been Brandon, and he totally sabotaged himself with his lack of weight loss. Alicia had a good run, and she should be proud of the weight loss (and I hope she keeps it up), but I would have been furious had she made it to the end and either Pinky or Shayla got the boot. It's a weight loss competition, yes, but it also is a dancing show, and she was up against some really impressive movers (all of the Final 3 have dance background, I believe, and it shows). Had she squeaked by and one of them lost a chance because of it, it would have just felt unjust. So good on you, show, even if I still think your scoring system is deeply problematic.

Next week: Finals! Pinky hurts herself! Everyone is back! Let's see how they look...

Alicia should have been there till the end!! She even lost more then any of the final 3!! And I don't know who writes this but do you anything about dance? Alicia technique is just amazing even more so for someone performing at her size!!! Her cha cha was waay better than Shayla's reason why : Alicia legs were bent, hips were not locked and danced on the 2 count, Shayla didn't do any of that! I'm a big fan of Alicia and hate blogs like this who don't know what they are talking about and just have their favorites.
