The challenge: design a pregnancy dress for Rebecca Romijn! Oh, she's so pretty! Having both her and Heidi on the runway at once gave me a total modelgasm. When this was filmed Rebecca was still pregnant with her twins (which were born last December, to give you a sense how long ago this season wrapped). The designers had to create a chic pregnancy outfit for her, but she left the type of outfit wide open. She just demanded that the look be form-fitting, which basically translated to: no muumuus, kids.
We got to learn a little more about the designers. Specifically, that Mitchell is officially a disaster; last week was not a fluke. He was worried that the first thing America would know about him is that he sent a naked model down the runway. Well, that's not exactly the first thing we knew about you, Mary. But if he was that worried about his awful job last week, you'd think he'd put a little more effort in this time around. You'd be wrong. Mitchell spent a large chunk of the episode farting around, showing everyone the gigantic shorts he made (more on those later), and pissing all over Ra'mon's Corn Flakes, telling him his hyper-fitted cocktail dress looked like a bowling ball bag (more on that later too).
Then there was Malvin, who appeared to have some kind of beaded item hanging off the back of his head and explained that his outfit revolved around images of fertility, specifically eggs and nests, and called his look "The Mother Hen." For real. Tim had an issue with his idea to make jodhpurs so that it looked like his mother had chicken thighs (all part of the concept, he assured us). His ridiculous intellectual posturing drove me up the wall, but if you close your eyes Malvin sounds like the women on the "SNL" skit "This Delicious Dish." Seriously, listen to him make the pun about the other designers not tapping into their potential -- "They haven't cracked the egg. So to speak" - and tell me he didn't sound EXACTLY like the "Shweaty Balls" routine. So I ended up kind of loving him this episode. I know. I'm as surprised as you are.
We also got a bit more time with Althea, and although her dress was gorgeous, I'm starting to worry about her taste level. Or maybe it's just her intelligence level, since she a) was shocked that Ari went home last week and b) thought she needed to be worried about similar crazy-pants Malvin. She also seemed to spend an awful lot of time meandering through the workroom looking at other people's work. Sister...you have time constraints.
On the runway, Monique Lhuillier filled in for Michael Kors. Boo. I love that orange-colored bitch and hate when he's gone. Of the looks, I found Logan's white top/black pant combo exceptionally blah, save for the back of its neck. Shirin created a really lovely jewel-toned dress paired with a comfy-looking wool jacket; it looked really good. Nicolas again left me cold; he's not living up to potential. Christopher was deluded about his design, saying it had "point of view" when it was completely generic. Did Qristyl pair a brown wrap dress with a black underdress? I think she did. Oh, Qristyl. Epperson's jumpsuit looked great once he lost the janked-up coat. Johnny's dress didn't make his model look pregnant, it made her look fat. Louise made a really sumptuous wine-colored, 20's-inspired dress with multiple layers and a flirty nightgown shape. Malvin's looked like a woman wrapped in a burlap sack. Ra'Mon's bunched like crazy; it looked poorly constructed. I hated the color on Carol Hannah's, and didn't get the jacket combo at all. Althea's deep blue gown with a ribbon bodice was beautiful. Irina's flirty dres had some bizarre tumor thing across the middle that ruined the whole look.
Louise, Mitchell, Althea, Malvin, Shirin, and Ra'mon were the highest/lowest scorers. That seemed pretty obvious to me: Althea, Shirin, and Louise in the top, the others in the bottom. Ra'mon's grape and gray cocktail dress was criticized for being too busy, and downright sloppy. They mocked him pretty mercilessly; Rebecca even made the same bowling ball bag reference Mitchell did. Lousie's blood-red gown got high praise (but looking at her portfolio I wonder if she can really do anything BUT that dress). Rebecca noted that it did in fact look like lingerie, which was Louise's concern, but she mitigated it well. Althea's evening gown got a lot of props for its color, and the design that accentuated the back. The judges seemed to like Malvin's feather detailing around the seams - I hated it - but his giant sling was a real problem for the panel. Nina said it was disturbing, since it looked like she'd already had the baby and was carrying it around. Heidi asked Rebecca if she really wanted to look like a chicken with an egg strapped to her. The judges really hated the construction of Mitchell's day look - the shorts were too short, the pregnancy band was showing, the t-shirt was too tight. Heidi actually asked, "Wow, how difficult is it to make a pair of shorts?" Nina called it a mess; Heidi called it a pregnant mess. HEE! Shirin wanted to focus on comfort, and they loved her cool drapework. The judges suggested she look into working in maternity since there wasn't a bad angle on her dress. Good on her; that's high praise.
In the end Shirin won (totally deserved, and way to make a statement that you're not to be dismissed as a pretty face). Ra'mon was spared, so it came down to nutty Malvin and useless Mitchell. Mitchell has sucked two weeks in a row, and really deserved to go home. Malvin may be bizarre but I find his ridiculous over-the-top bullshit hilarious. And yet, Malvin got eliminated! How did that happen? Heidi even called Mitchell's work "unacceptable." And yet he got to stay? Malvin took his elimination as a sign that he's too conceptual for America. Probably true. He and Ari can comfort themselves in their cracked-out looloo land, where everyone wears silver soccer balls or dresses like fertile chickens. Seriously, where do they find these people?

oh bummer...I liked Mary until he started designing...bah
Malvin kind of creeped me out...like majorly...I could kind of tell he was going home right from the beginning though...Usually in the early parts of these reality shows, the episode tends to focus on someone who we have not really seen or heard from yet for the whole season, (did you see him in the first episode? I dont remember him) on the episode that they go home.
Honestly I wont miss him though...I'm glad they got rid of the space cadets early on.
I'd have to say though, my favorite part of the evening was when one of the designers made a reference to Stella, and said "Leathaaaa" - I wonder how she is doing haha.
I'm hoping next weeks challenge will be a little better...nobody has "Wow'ed" me yet, like in past seasons.

Ra'Mon "I think she's in her 2nd semester" hahaha.
Loved Shirin's design, well deserved. Do you think you'll be blogging about Models of the Runway? That was pretty funny this week with Fatma getting picked by Mitchell.
