After her spat with Epperson last episode, Qristyl started off being worried about being seen as the bitch. When Gordana tried to explain that the issue was that she didn't stand up for herself early enough, Qristyl responded by...being a total bitch. So that's working out well for her.
The challenge: each designer had to create an outfit for his or her model that would impress fashion-industry professionals. That's fairly broad, and left a lot of room for interpretation (read: some bad prom dresses). And it was a one-day challenge. Can you even imagine creating a whole garment in less than 24 hours? I know I bitch about these people all the time, but it's a good reminder that they are creating whole outfits in no time at all. Much respect.
Irina's model seemed totally unsure of what she wanted. Johnny and his model seemed to gel immediately. Shirin's model wanted a royal blue satin jumpsuit with gold rope. Um, no! What is wrong with that girl? Sometimes I weep for the future of our country. Qristyl said her model likes warm colors, like chocolate brown or black. In what universe are brown and black "warm" colors?
During Tim's check in we got to see Althea, who was working on a pair of funky shorts paired with a men's smoking jacket. Interesting concept! I don't ever find her work boring, I will say that. Christopher's green dress looked awful to me; it was very 80's prom, but cheap 80's prom. I loved Epperson's dress, which was a very deconstructed skin-tight black dress. Qristyl was mixing black and brown AGAIN, and Tim said it looked messy. And also lazy; it looked like she just twisted two fabrics together and called it a day. Logan worried that his dress looked like it belonged at a Smurf prom. That was astute. Carol Hannah's dress had a lovely plum color, and I thought the shape was quite interesting, although Tim felt the top was a touch matronly.
Qristyl wisely decided to totally abandon her crappy original look and go for something simple in black. Epperson's model wanted orange, but all the orange fabric looked cheap, so he went with his instincts and chose black, and it looked faboosh. Johnny's neediness showed up again while fitting his model. I worry about him. Shirin seemed to have serious isues with her model, and I feared for her. Logan's garment kept getting worse and worse. When they gave us prep shots of him shirtless I figured he might be getting the boot.
There was massive shit-talking before the runway show; Irina said Althea's outfit would have looked better if it was stapled together, Nicolas figured that Johnny and Epperson would be in the bottom, while Christopher felt that Epperson's shredded dress could be one that the judges would either hate, or love. I figured it would be the latter.
None of the judging panel were the regulars - I won't even bother giving you their names because, whatever. Qristyl's dress was super basic; it wasn't bad, just dull. Nicola's gown was chic, a mix of shiny white and gray. Irina's look was a lovely print cocktail dress under a cropped jacket with a huge collar. Gordana's dress was totally model; it was nude-colored and had an interesting macramé-like detail down the front.Shirin's outfit was Navy blue, but not a jumpsuit, thank god. Logan's dress was...yeah. Christopher's dress got better with its black banding, but remained totally underwhelming. Epperson's model looked like sex on a stick in his dress. Johnny's dress was really sloppy. Althea's look was interesting, although the proportions looked off. Louise's dress didn't seem appropriate for a party, with its giant ruffle neckline. Speaking of giant, Ra'mon's beatiful blue dress had this humongous flower detail on the front that, while pretty, was totally ridiculous (and very "Sex and the City" Season 3). And I loved Carol Hannah's skirt and the color, but I wasn't sure about the top.
Once again the safe group called by Heidi included my favorite looks, including those by Nicolas and Gordana. The judges loved Carol Hannah's gown, calling it sophisticated but not stuffy. Logan's dress was deemed "cheap, tacky, prom" and "NO." Ouch! And then one of the judges sexually harassed him. Epperson's dress was indeed embraced by the judges, the guy judge was especially impressed by his work with the stretch fabric and layering. Johnny's dress was called uninteresting, and Heidi called it "bridesmaid." But he dealt with it well. Qristyl's dress aged her model, according to Heidi, and another judge called it safe. So OK, I don't know who these judges are, but they were super bitchy, and I loved it. Heidi really loved Althea's look, and thought it was very chic. Several of the judges wanted to buy it right off the runway! Go Althea!
Althea won! I'm glad, I like her. Suck it, Irina. Epperson and Carol Hannah were also obviously in. Johnny was spared, leaving a Bottom 2 of Qristyl and Logan. They could both go for all I care, but Qristyl has been sending shitty designs down the runway the entire show so far. Logan's just mostly been bland and forgettable. But he was in, meaning Qristyl was sent home. That's good; I really liked the idea of a plus-sizes designer on this show, but that designer is not Qristyl, who has a pretty terrible sense of fabrics.
Next week: looks like they have to do an untraditional materials challenge, and it seems to be inspired by Jeffrey's newspaper dress from Season 3.
