Auditions, Round 2. Ding! Tonight's episode took us to Phoenix, Arizona to find more potential contestants. This time Nigel and Mary were joined by the one, the only Mia Michaels. I love that bitch - and she usually is a bitch at auditions. If I recall, it was her that said "I love cutting people that aren't good at their jobs" last season.
OK, onto the auditions. Once again, I'm going to pick a handful of my favorite moments since we won't be seeing many of these dancers again.
-Kicking off auditions this time were Biggie and Shorty - and they were just that, a heavy-set guy and a short(er) guy. They did a comedic hip-hop routine where they played off each other. Shorty actually did some pretty good ticking, but other than that, I thought it was pretty mediocre. The judges thought they were so entertaining that they let them stick around for choreography. Really judges? Really? Sometimes I wonder if we're watching the same routines. Biggie quit in the middle of the choreography round, and Shorty was eventually cut.
-Sasha Mallory performed an absolutely beautiful contemporary/lyrical routine. This girl understands choreography. It wasn't just a solo - it was a memorable routine. Mia said it was one of the better solo's she's seen. Wow. What a compliment! She's straight through to Vegas.
-Allison (missed the last name) has spinal meningitis and is hearing impaired, but doesn't let that stop her from being a beautiful dancer. Her routine showed that she is a solid dancer, but isn't the strongest in terms of technique . Nonetheless she really got into it and you can tell dancing her passion. Mary said the audition was beautiful and that Allison was a huge inspiration for people everywhere. After killing it in the choreography round, she got a ticket straight to Vegas.
-Same-sex dancing is back again this season. Willem and Jacob performed a beautiful, slow ballroom number. It was a little odd to watch the two men dance together at first, but after a few seconds, the beauty of the routine erased any of that doubt. Their technique was stellar and their lines just went on and on. Both Mary and Mia welled up a bit and after sending them to the choreography round, they both got through to Vegas week. Good on 'em.
-Livewire Jarvis Johnson has more energy than a 5-year-old after downing an entire bag of Halloween candy. They showed a brief montage of him jumping around, encouraging other contestants, and screaming ... a lot. He did a hip-hop routine to "Low", which didn't have a lot of structure, but had some great moments. At one point he collapsed to the floor, picked himself up (no hands!) and then did it again. He even kicked off his shoes and did the moonwalk, and was a barrel of laughs to watch. Mary gave him her vote for choreography, and then he talked Nigel into it too. During the choreography round, Jarvis suddenly collapsed. Turned out it was a panic/asthma attack. He decided to head home, although I wouldn't be surprised to see him back next year.
-Jonathan "Legacy" Perez, like his name suggests, is kind of a legend. The hip-hop and break dancer performed one of the best (and only) breaking auditions we've seen in a long time. There was one move (the "spider" I think it's called) where he walked across the stage on his hands and wriggled his body. It was solid, but not outstanding. In an effort to fill the serious hip-hop void on this show, they sent him to Vegas.
I didn't mention it, but majority of tonight's episode consisted of heinously bad audition montages (hence the blog title). If I learned anything, it's that I'll be crossing Phoenix off my vacation spots list - it's filled with crazy people!

Is it just me or are they stretching out the auditions this year? Over the summer they did all the auditions over 2 weeks, (I think it was 2 or 3 nights a week) followed by one week of Vegas. At the rate they are moving, it seems like we will be lucky to see the competition start by Halloween...
Anyway, I was happy the hearing impaired girl killed her choreography round and made it to Vegas. Usually when reality TV shows latch on to something that they think will "inspire" someone, it is lame, (read: Tyra keeping Thalia the burn victim on top model) - but with her, she actually had some talent, and was worth watching.
Bravo SYTYCD!
