We're still slowly chugging along through these audition specials (anyone else feel like they're taking longer than usual?). Tonight's audition episode took us to Boston. I don't know if they've ever gone to Boston before. Joining Nigel and Mary this round was über-bitch/hack-Broadway choreographer Tyce DiOrio. I've never been a fan of his B'way stuff, but he shocked the pants of me with his lyrical stuff last season (Randi & Evan's first routine was particularly incredible).
As usual, I'll only recap a handful of my favorite moments from the show. So here goes: the good, the bad, and the downright ugly.
*Teddy Tedholm came dressed to impress for the auditions. Clad in hideous tan-and-yellow plaid pants and a bowtie, he did an odd ... lyrical? I guess? What it was I found it surprisingly entertaining. It was full of spastic, fast sections followed by very controlled pieces. He had great musicality, is very quirky and really knows how to work the crowd. The judges thought he was "crazy brilliant" and sent him straight to Vegas. I doubt he'll make the show (although "hip-hopper" Tony managed to snag a spot in last season's Top 20, so I guess anything is possible).
*Gene Lloret started off pretty slow, but really knocked everyone out of their seats when he balanced himself on his hands, and made his legs go all the way around his body. It was insane. Certainly one of the best B-boys we've seen in a while. Without even saying a word, the judges gave him a ticket straight through to Vegas
*Channing Cooke, an energetic 18-year-old ice cream scooper, performed a beautiful lyrical dance. I couldn't stop watching. She had great technique, extension, and control, but I felt like it was lacking that extra "oomph!" quality. They asked her to stick around for choreography - legs for days! - and then put her through to Vegas.
*Ryan Casey, who I affectionately nicknamed ‘the dancing giant,' brought it with his tapping. His control and technique were just fabulous - there were so many different, intricate rhythms in his routine. He used his taps like a percussion instrument, getting louder and softer with some steps. His arms were flailing all over the place though, which made him look kind of clumsy. The judges sent him to choreography, but didn't put him through to Vegas week.
*Fabrizio ‘Breeze' Jenkins started off his hip-hop routine with some adequate popping, but it just got repetitive for me - until he rolled his ankle and fell on his bum. He covered it pretty well though. He's fun to watch for about 15 seconds, but ultimately not right for this competition. They were going to let him stick around, but given the strain to his ankle, he decided to forgo the choreography round.
*Narcissistic Gene Burston performed a solo Lain ballroom routine that was technically sound, but his ego got in the way. His eyebrows had their own choreography for Pete's sake! I've never seen a guy pull his face so much (and that includes S4's Thayne). Terrifying. But after the choreography, he was sent to Vegas week. I pity any girl that has to put up with him as a partner - he's like that creepy, overly confident guy who tries to grope you at a dance club. Yikes!
*46-year-old spandex-ed Paul Maglioto gave one of the weirdest auditions I've ever seen on this show. It looked like he was figure skating (badly) without the ice. It certainly seemed like he was having fun, but the guy is downright delusional if he thinks he's making the show. I think a lot of times these people are just camera whores. The judges gave him a brutally honest critique of his "dancing" and after telling him he's too old for the competition (literally - apparently there's an age limit), sent him on his way.
Next week it's off to Atlanta. Aside from the first week of auditions, this year's pre-Top 20 shows have been pretty lackluster. Not bad, just not outstanding. Can't we just fast-forward to Vegas week? Pretty please?!
