"America's Next Top Model" Cycle 14: The worst bunch of girls ever

I knew that last season was the "short cycle," only featuring girls 5'7" or shorter. I did not know that this season was the "tragic cycle," starring almost exclusively unattractive, stank bitches. I know Tyra has made some questionable casting decisions in the past (Cycle 12's Tahlia; ‘nuff said), but she cannot be serious with this crop. Even after the first-episode makeovers, which admittedly did make major improvements on most of the girls, there is not a single one of them that I can see rooting for, much less winning this thing.

Never before has this show seen such a roster of homely bitches. I know that fashion looks for odd, interesting features, but there still has to be SOMETHING pretty there, right? I feel almost cruel watching the majority of these girls clomp around, thinking they have a shot at profesional modeling. However, there is one bright spot out of all that ugly: they may be disasters, but these bitches have lots of entertainment potential. We had several fights in the span of the 90-minute premiere (basically the casting episode plus makeovers; I wonder how they're going to fill next week's edition), and with this much stankness in the house, there's bound to be more. Here are my thoughts on the girls, in alphabetical order. Because god knows I can't rate them in order of potential, since most of them have none.

Alasia: Discount-bin version of Cycle 5's Bre. Alasia initially showed up at casting wearing a wig that made her look 20 years older. She then proceeded to actually fall out when Tyra walked in. This girl is an idiot, and seems to be screaming all the time. She's the type of person who loves to throw God references at you, but who also can't accurately cite the passage of the Bible she's quoting. There's nothing modelesque about her. Even her curly-haired makeover looks like something you'd see on any girl on any street in any city in the world.

Alexandra: Our token plus-sized contestant of the cycle. I actually like Alexandra's girlie tomboy personality, and her body is among the best of the plus-sized girls we've ever had (right up there with C10 winner Whitney). She is what I would call 80's beautiful. I don't think there's anything really edgy or interesting about her, but due to the rest of the losers this time around she's one of the stronger models in the group.

Angelea: Oh, this girl. I knew - I KNEW - when she got the boot at casting for Cycle 12 that we were not rid of her. Her tackiness and desperation know no bounds, and I'm sure she had the producers just salivating over the thought of putting her stank ass in the house. Were this, say, "Bad Girls Club" or one of the "Flavor of Love" shows, that would be fine. But this is supposed to be a modeling competition, and there is nothing - nothing - about Angelea that is modelesque. I will be blunt: this girl is straight-up gutter trash, and she is proud of it. She ditched the tacky acrylics, but she remains actually boastful of her hood-rat attitude, getting into it with at least two of the girls before the episode ended over absolutely nothing. Her features are common, to put it mildly. She contorts her Gollum-like body in the most ridiculous ways. She is the worst, and of course she's from Buffalo. Thanks for making Western New York look terrible, Angelea. HAAAATE!

Anslee: Prior to her makeover Anslee had what I'm going to call "Dust Bowl chic." She had that fried-looking, limply wavy hair, those sunken eyes and cheeks, and an overall look of desperation. Her shorter, brighter new hair helps a lot, but there is nothing fresh about this girl. She looks severe, sad, and roughly 40.

Brenda: Flame-haired Brenda is one of the prettier girls in the competition (not saying much), and her new short haircut immediately took years off her face. But things go south when Brenda smiles. The teeth are not good. They're distracting, in fact, and I hope the show does something to help her on that front. Because she's one of only two girls I can even realistically see having a shot at winning this. She does seem to be a bit of a drip, though.

Gabrielle: I don't know why they cast Gabrielle the same season as Angelea. Gabrielle even pointed out that they're essentially filling the same role. That is, incredibly skinny (read: malnourished) biracial girl with a gigantic chip on her shoulder. Gabrielle does have some of the birdlike features that the fashion industry loves, but I don't think her face takes make-up well, and I can't stand listening to her speak. She just sounds so sullen and stupid. This show has been on for 13 seasons already; don't these girls know that the winner has to sound at least reasonably intelligent?

Jessica: Jessica screams filler to me. Blandly pretty, pageant-ish, na�ve. She got knocked up at 16, allegedly the first time she had sex, and the father of her baby was 22 at the time. Pretty sure that's a felony. Jessica could surprise me (she looks so much more striking as a brunette than she ever did as a blonde), but thus far she lacks spark.

Krista: Krista has been trying out for this show since the first season. That may seem like a long time, but considering that Krista has been alive since the Civil War, it's all relative. Seriously, this girl claims to be 24, but I think the numbers got reversed. She looks so matronly; there is nothing soft or fresh about her. The bone structure is good, the skin tone is beautiful, but she just looks OLD. She bitched when her makeover consisted solely of a removable ponytail (removable ponytail!), but it was the only thing that made her look even remotely young and perky. She is also a stank bitch. However, girl has serious taste in clothes.

Naduah: Naduah has one of the most striking looks - her head is totally shaved - and one of the show's more disturbing sob stories: she was born into a religious cult, one that abused her physically, emotionally, and perhaps (it's implied) sexually. If Naduah doesn't make F6 just for that, I'll be surprised. But she also gives great, edgy face and has a banging body. I just don't see her winning a Cover Girl contract, unless the company is coming out with a new base that covers scalp stubble.

Raina: Raina has beautiful individual features. However, none of them work together. It's like someone clipped parts of faces out of magazines - a nose, some eyes, cheek bones - and pasted them all together into a new face, and the result is borderline grotesque. And those eyebrows! She is undeniably interesting looking, but when you look at how everything relates together, it's all very strange. The darker hair color prescribed by Tyra went a long way toward bringing her disparate features together, and I'm very curious to see how she photographs. But I just can't see this one going too far. (She seems incredibly sweet, however.)

Ren: Now this is weird. At the end of casting Tyra informed the semi-finalists that she and the Jays could only agree on 12 finalists. Translation: we just realized we picked ourselves a big ol' pool o' ugly. So she informed the girls that the show had hand-picked the 13th girl, who would be joining them in New York. That would be Ren. Ren is what they call a "plant" in showbiz terms. The show scouted her specifically for the competition. It's easy to see why: she is obviously one of the prettier girls in the mix, and has a wan emo look that would totally work in the fashion world. But she's also one of those insufferable alterna chicks who thinks she's too cool for just about everything, and seemed appalled once she was stuck in the house with the rest of these bitches. I want to see how Ren does in pictures, but I'm already over her over-this vibe.

Simone: Simone is my other pick for a potential winner. She's gorgeous, and I love the edged-out haircut they gave her. The problem comes when she speaks. First, she talks like a valley girl. And second, the tone of her voice is beyond grating. This girl just DRONES. I shudder to think what her inevitable commercial will sound like.

Tatianna: I don't even understand what this girl is doing here. Again, major teeth issues. The face is not strong. Her personality is almost nonexistent. She may surprise me, but after the premiere I thought she was among the most tragic girls of the bunch.

So that's the sorry lot we have to work with. Have all the pretty girls in the country been used up already? Have actual modelesque girls wised up to the fact that almost nobody who wins this show goes on to a successful modeling career? (Jaslene being the notable exception.) I don't know, but instead of looking forward to amazing photos and fierce runway walks, I've resigned myself to look at this cycle as nothing but a drama engine. And with bitches like Angelea, Krista, and Alasia in the house, I don't think there will be any shortage of that.

Next week: nude photo shoot! Someone gets knocked off the runway!

I think this bunch has a lot of potential, and although some may not be the "prettiest" at first glance, I think there are some who will pull some high fashion, editorial photos.

I totally agree with this article. Even after they were made over, they didn't look good. I wondered if anyone else would notice how bad they looked. I thought maybe it was just me! They just dont look like models.

Oh, Opal, I fear that you may have misinterpreted here. I have no objection to women -- quite the opposite, actually. The show itself regularly refers to its contestants as "bitches" (it's part of the same lingo as "fierce"), which in the fashion world has both positive and negative connotations. Here I was mostly using it in the pejorative, since many of the contestants this season appear to be hyper-aggressive and catty. But regular "ANTM" viewers know that the term bitch is thrown about fairly often on the show. Even Tyra herself has referred to the contestants as "bitches" before, albeit in a loving way.

I've been looking forward to this show, but now, why bother? Isn't it obvious that the winner has already been decided, and that all the true competition was sent home last night to make this possible? I'll have to find some other way to fill Monday nights; this season won't be worth my time.

Adding Ren to the mix at the last minute only makes the production of ANTM seem clunky, haphazard and inconsistent. When Tyra explained that there was going to be a mystery 13th girl, I honestly thought Amber from last season was going to re-appear from the 5'7'' or less shaped hole that she vanished into after semi-finals of cycle 13. The least they could have done was organise a final photoshoot for the remaining eight girls to measure their potential. I'd imagine they're feeling pretty cheated that Ren stepped in at the eleventh hour - plucked from obscurity after presumably spending hours writing Death Cab lyrics on her blog and googling cheap tofu recipes while the genuine semi-finalists had their cheeks, chests and childhoods analysed by Tyra and co.

Eric, I was incredibly happy to find your article.. I could not agree with you more! Although its still only the first episode, i cannot find many postive things to say about these girls. I vomited a little when Angelea was selected.. she may have been denied before and made it this time, but only Jaslene can come back and win. She should be good for entertainment purposes, though (bitch, please) and I think the only thing we disagree on is our opinion of Gabrielle. I like her most because she not only is the direct competition of Angelea, but the girl seems to know her stuff, and her photo of imitating a model, an obscure model at that, was very nice! Who knows, maybe before she left for the competition, she Googled lesser known models, and i know, when she speaks, its a big mess... but look at cycle 6 winner Dani! If she can do it, I'm sure Gabrielle can too. So I'm more or less rooting for Gabrielle... the rest, well... just have to wait and see.

This article is hilarious, love it! I actually agree that this is a horrid bunch, where are the Nicole's, the Natasha's (still can't believe she didn't win...) The only girls I find remotely interesting and modelly are Ren, Simone, and Naduah.

Don't you think there is something totally fishy about the Ren situation? They settled on all of the other nasty models, I'm sure it would have been easy to find a 13th to settle on. So strange.

I been watching top model faithfully and in my opinion DA worst bunch of girls was cycle short girly (5'7) under. I believe cycle 14 will be surprising well with successful photo shots I'm routeing for Simone of course & beautiful chic DAT was raised in a cult: -( poor thang .but tyra love u keep up DA awesome work.

I agree w/ the main title! When I saw the line-up I thought, 'We have scraped the bottom of America's Barrel , flipped it over and dug under the ground beneath.' Although I have my 'one gem' out of the Bunch this whole cast is questionable.

These women are beautiful and so diverse. I think Ren and Brenda and anslee are the worst. This is a pool of different and diverse woman. Its anybodys game this cycle. I can't see a winner yet but these girls need time. My faves include Raina, Jessica, Krista, tiatiana, and angelea.

Nice response, I pretty much agree with you and your comments. One suggestion though- could you maybe try using more descriptors than just "stank" and "bitches"? First time you used it, okay it was amusing. Second time: forgivable. 4th, 5th, 6th time???? Downright annoying. Sorry, but if you didn't repeat yourself so often your article would be way more compelling.

Eric I completely, and utterly disagree with you. I think that these girls while not looking their best at first have great modeling potential. Now I agree that Krista looks old (lol about the numbers switched thing) but Gabrielle is probably one of the best in the bunch. Even though she was unfairly eliminated, she still took amazing photos. Alasia is annoying, Alexandra is ok, I think Anslee is an annoying little mother f*cker, Angelea has no modeling potental but she will be good for drama, Brenda ...... ugh, there is nothing I can say about that one, Simone I like, Gabrielle I LOVE!, Krista is an old, bitchy gramma, Jessica is cute and takes better photos than most of the other girls, Raina is amazing!, Tatianna is ok, she might get better, I love Naduah (it sucks she got eliminated), and Ren is a stupid little brat with an ugly makeover who thinks shes to cool for it, shes only doing it so her mom will like her, she does NOT take good photos, and I hate her voice (it always sounds like she's stoned)

Cullen: After getting a couple episodes into the season, I must admit that many of my initial impressions of the girls have changed. On the whole they're taking better photos than I expected -- the first nude shoot was especially impressive. The second and third photo shoots haven't fared as well, but I agree that Gabrielle had no business going home first, over other terrible models like Angelea (have hated all of her pics so far), Brenda (stinking it up big time the past two weeks), and Tatianna, whose face I do not get at all.

I can see why people hate Anslee, but I think her photos thus far have been stunning. Alasia's shot last week was beautiful, but she's awful in general. Raina's face still looks completely disproportionate to me. Simone is bland as bathwater. Alexandra is barely passable, and really should have been in the Bottom 2 for her disastrous runway performance. Glad Ren is gone; she put the "poser" back in poseur, and her "My mommy doesn't love me" BS... Some people have real problems, dear.

I'm hoping to blog about this week's episode. Sorry I've been off a couple weeks!

I'm just going to stick myslef into this mess to defend Raina. I believe she is an absolutely stunning girl, with amazing features, and probably the best personality in the bunch. I can tell you right now that as soon as she goes home, I'm going with her because the rest of the girls are total crap.

Alasia, and Angelea are pretty much driving the sanity out of me, and I'm just on the other end of the screen. You know the only reason Angelea was put into this competition is because the judges feel sorry for her. They love a determined girl, and that's exactly what they got from Angelea because she has nothing better to do with her life than to seek acceptance from others. She's downright pathetic, ugly, and needs to leave this competition. Honestly, when I look at her, I think hooker. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Alasia, this girl needs to shut up. I can't bring myself to understand why she's here... She has absolutely NO appeal whatsoever. She has consistently taken horrible photos, she is downright ugly, she is immature and is irritating to the viewers, contestants, and judges.... I just can't comprehend it.

I'm putting money on Alasia leaving next-- and Raina better win this competition.

I agree "partially" with what you said, just not how you say it. I won't use 'ugly' as an insult since that would seem like a jealousy comment and a lot of the younger audience use that but I might use 'unattractive' as a good word. Now I will say that I know tv tends to make things seem more dramatic and worse than they actually are since viewers cannot live without drama but here goes my opinion, judging by what I see.

Angelea: I think Angelea should sent home soon but not because of her looks. It's her attitude that turns me off, I'll give her that she's 'real' to me but other wise that's all she has going for her. Although I will admit her photo in episode 6 was the best of the bunch and even I was impressed. She did good. However, she is not the best and she needs to stop acting like it. She's not the most beautiful girl so she needs to tone down that 'I'm so much better than everyone else because I'm real' attitude. I doubt she will win though. .they usually don't choose those kind of girls as winners. There's nothing unique or special about her.

Krista: Her photo was the second best in episode 6 but otherwise she doesn't appeal to me. She also has this 'I'm so much better than everyone else' attitude. I doubt she will win for that reason.

Alasia: I will admit her temper turns me off and sometimes her attitude does too but I think she'll be there awhile. What she has going for her is that she's young so she still has a couple years to become a model if she doesn't make it. She turns some lovely photos but god when she's bad, she's really bad. I don't see her winning for that reason, her immaturity and her temper. She doesn't have that 'wow' quality.

Anslee: I think she is a beautiful girl but she isn't the most beautiful I ever seen so for her to have that attitude is just sad. She has taken some beautiful photos and her love for her child makes me like her somewhat but if that's the only reason she's there, then she doesn't really want to be there as bad as the other girls. I think she has a chance to last a long time but I don't see her winning.

Alexandra: I actually like her and her plus size figure doesn't bother me at all. She seems really down to her and she stays out of the drama the other girls 'love' being in. Sometimes she takes wonderfully beautiful photos but sometimes her photos lack that special quality for me. Despite that, I think she has a chance of winning.

Jessica: I think she is beautiful and takes beautiful photos sometimes. I used to like her until I saw episode 6. I will admit in episode 5, her 'slutty' attitude in the challenge [where they had to question the male model] turned me off quickly but I was willing to let that go. After episode 6, she came across as a spoiled self centered snobby 'known it all' b*tch. I know females in general act like that anyway but her attitude took it to a whole new level. Rolling her eyes, snobby tone, questioning the judges, raising her brows, and just that whole 'I'm better than you' attitude. I will confess every girl, except Alexandra, in episode 6 had that attitude to an extent but hers, Kristas, and Angeleas stood out the most. If she keeps that attitude up, she won't win. If she straightens out and realizes her sh*t stinks too, then she may have a chance again.

Raina: I think Raina has a unique kind of beauty. However I think she hangs around Jessica and Brenda [granted she got sent home in episode 6] too much and learns off them. She really comes across as a sweet girl but she needs to stop being influenced by everyone else. She may have a chance to win if she can stand on her own and stop letting everyone influence her attitude.

In conclusion, most of these girls need to straighten out. Like I said, I agree partially with this entry but not completely.

after reading this article i could see how stupid and ignorant you are when it comes to speaking about this topic... I will speak about each girl and tell you what I think about them:

Raina: I personally love this girl. i think she has potential and could possibly win this cycle, her makeover made her look more like a covergirl and her pictures are simply gorgeaus.

Jessica: I cannot believe you actually had critic about this girl. her face and body is extrordinary and her pictures are simply amazing. I think she and raing will make the top three

anglea: ok she does have a bit of attitude but hey her pictures are breathtaking she is always called first or second so stop juddging her.

alasia: everyone is hating on her just because she is loud. now let me tell you something her pictures are amazing and just because she is loud doesn't mean she is a baby. i would personally prefer a girl who is loud than a girl who is all the time complaining.

Alexandra: she has a perfect face and a slamming body to go with. she does certainly represent american women at their best. besides, her pictures are very good

krista: ok i have to agree she is a little bit old for this competition but hey that does not mean she doesn't have what it takes.

anslee: i have to admit she was the least fav of the bunch in my opinion but her face was simply gorgeaus.

brenda: she has a extrordinary face and her teeth have nothing wrong and some of her pics were very good.

Tatiana: I cannot believe you actually mocked this girls' face considering that she is a very beautiful girl. with or without the makeover she still would have been beautiful.

Simone: now this girl has class because she isn't just beautiful but she is also intelligent. she has both the beauty and the intelligence so she rocks!!

Ren: she was also one of the girl's i didn't like because all she did was annoy others but i have to say some of her pics were good

naduah: i liked her because her face was rare and if she had stopped thinking highly of herself she could have gone far in this competition

finally gabrielle: i completly disagred when they sent her home because the brought work to the table and she deserved a second chance. do not give up gabby you are so beautiful...

and for christ sakes stop mocking the judges saying that they did not perform a good job because i think they performed a gr8 job and they should be thanked not mocked by a bunch of sadoes like you....go binge eat you stupid whore !!

This season sucks, apart from a few stunning looking girls, that is Raina (who is GORGEOUS!!!!), Gabrielle and Ren. I still can't believe Gabrielle got sent home so early on, seeing as she had tons more potential than for example Tatiana or Alasia. I felt sorry for Ren, cause I can relate to how she felt in that insane asylum of a house. Jessica has surprised me so far - I thought she'd be one of those typical girl next door types, but luckily she isn't. Now as for the worst two characters I have seen in any ANTM seasons - Angelea and Alasia. Those two need to shut the f**k up!!! Angelea is annoying, cheap-looking, trashy and obnoxious. However, she has taken a few good pics. Alasia, on the other hand, is just wrong. She is boring-looking, arrogant with no reason to be, dumb as hell and I can't see why they still keep her there. She made the girls late TWICE in one episode, knows NOTHING whatsoever about fashion/designers/models and can't socialise to save her life. The only reason she has taken some good photos (and I have to admit that the one in episode 7 was awesome) is because she just gets lucky. So please send that moronic waste of space home!!!

Eye for beauty and beauty queens is different from eyes for modeling. Models are not beauty queens. Matter of fact, most of them are not what the masses see as 'beautiful'. They happen to be photogenic. They photograph well. To make it in the business as a professional model however, is beyond editorials, beauty and haute couture. It takes willingness to change your environment and to be adaptable and resilient. I dont see those primordial attributes on most of those girls... Angelea and Alasia are good entertainment. Enough said.

apparently, you have no experience in any facet of the modeling industry in ANY way, because your opinions are ridiculously OPPOSITE what the industry actually requires in a model. first off, have you BEEN to a fashion show (rhetorical question; obviously youve never even seen one on tv)- ALL the girls are bone thin like angelea- which is why she booked every go-see she went to. her body type is perfect for high fashion- extremely thin and very tall. look it up. raina has a gorgeous face (yes, WITH all the features together), and has worked in the past. i think your predictions also show you dont know how antm works- simone winning?? shes a throw-away cast memeber because shes portrayed as "boring" (who knows if she really is, but she hasnt caught my attention), and the same goes for brenda. this cast actually has the MOST pre-show work than any other cycle; most of the girls have or have had agencies backing them, and have plenty of pre-show work out there- including jessica, who has booked editorial work repeatedly BEFORE the show started.

i honestly love the cycles of top model up until after season 12. i enjoyed that group of girls but now i just think tyra needs to give up on this show. i watched the final 4 of the short girls cycle and there was one girl in there that could not talk or walk and seemed down syndrome to me.(i think it was the girl that took second). but yeah Tyra--- GIVE IT UP. now all it is, is them trying to make money and cast the weirdest looking, bitchiest, drama filled girls they can. and i watched one episode of season 14 and the alaisia girl was soooo bitchy and loud and so damn annoying. and at the photo shoot she did absolutely nothing and staying in practically the same place the entire time. and she was in the like top 5 to be called. and i just dont understand tyras thinking on that. but i guess there have been many girls before that have been very rude or just plain boring and took terrible pictures and have moved on easily ( ann Cycle 4, sara cycle 6, bre cycle 5) so i cant help but think that the show is completely rigged. but i do believe that the winners up until and including cycle 10 were very good. I loved Yoanna Eva Nicole Jaslene and Saliesha. I definately thought that Joanie should have won cycle 6 and Melrose should have won cycle 7. and i really liked saliesha but i really thought Chantal should have won. And i liked naima until i saw the E! true hollywood story on top model and Naima said, "there was no way i was nervous, and even if its arrogant to sat, i knew i had won," and unfortunately after she said that my outlook completely changed about her and i think she is an arrogant bitch now. she should have just lied and tried to be humble. but i mostly like all the winners. and i loved Teyona but i liked allison so much too! i wish they both could haave won. but anyways....tyra----GIVE IT UP. you have made enough money and enough dreams come true!!!

i think ren was one of the worst looking girls. plus her attitude made it worse. she shouldve never been picked to begin with. shes gross. and angelea...wuts so great about her?! shes not attractive at all and as for looking likee a model..she doesnt! she looks like any other hoodrat and talks like one too. i myself liked tatiana and alex. SHE IS NOT FUKING PLUS SIZED. shes healthy all the other bitches are bones its gross. theres skinny and then theres ugly skinny. theyre all ugly skinny. rainas eyebrows are disgusting just like her lips an nose and her voice..annoying!!! they only kept angelea in for so long to keep her as drama and make her feel good or something cuz u KNEW she wasnt gonna make it. and she praised tyra..how pathetic and weird

I totally agree with you. The girls are getting less and less attractive looking with each new cycle. Where are all the stunning, model-looking girls? Have they already been picked?
