"So You Think You Can Dance" 2010: Dallas & Nashville Auditions and Vegas Week, pt. 1

Things are moving fast this season with "Dance" and I can't say I'm complaining. Tonight's auditions wrapped up in the South with Dallas and Nashville, and we even got to see the first part of Vegas Week.

In Dallas, Nigel was joined by Tyce DiOrio and ballroom expert Toni Redpath - another new judge-choreographer this season.

Starting off the Dallas auditions was Ida Saki. Ida did a gorgeous routine to a slow ballet that showed off her incredible control. She kept leaping and then landing ever so softly - she just floated across the stage. We found out after her audition that Ida and her family are from Iran, where her mother tried to dance, but was not allowed to. In this competition, inspiring story + talent = ticket to Vegas.

Rebecca Hart's audition flashed by pretty quick, but she did a beautifully controlled pirouette into developpé. She got a ticket to Vegas.

Connor "Scooter Rocket" McLaughlin looks like Clay Aikin's skinny younger brother and showed up to auditions in a motorcycle helmet and rollerblades. For his audition, he skated around stage, clumsily flailing his arms. It was bad; really bad. He wasn't even that graceful on the skates. After a bit of banter, the judges sent him packing.

I had my doubts when Nicole Knudson showed up with a mop of curly hair on the top of her head ala Marge Simpson. Her routine was exotic, cool, and technically brilliant. The judges drooled over her and sent her straight to Vegas.

Deroccius Harris, 29, kicked off Day 2 of auditions with a routine to Brittany Spears's "Toxic" in super glossy spandex pants. Yikes!

Marcela Raneri introduced herself by saying her dad was a former mobster. That's a new one. Now she designs lingerie with her mom. Ooookay. She did a technically nice audition, but it felt very competition-y. She did lots of fouette turns, which were nicely executed, but lacked any real feeling behind them. The judges sent her to choreography (partially out of fear, I think), and eventually to Vegas.

Jordan Johnson, 26, did a crazy cool hip-hop routine with humor and incredible popping and locking. From his rock music to his past - he had a drug problem, but is now five years sober - he's got the whole bad boy vibe down. The judges called him exciting and enticing and sent him straight to Vegas. Good on 'em. I'd love to see him again. He's one of the few strong b-boys we've seen at auditions so far.

The final stop on the audition tour this year was Nashville, where Nigel was joined by Adam and Broadway choreographer Joey Dowling on the judging panel.

Faith Looney did a Flamenco routine with her "bestest" friend that was beyond BOR-ING. Aside from looking and acting like a 13 year old, she looked like she was asleep throughout and lacked any real gusto. No ticket for her.

The show did several long montages of bad auditions; apparently Nashville wasn't turning up many good dancers. I was wondering how they were going to fit both audition rounds in and show us the first part of Vegas. Turns out it's because the auditions in Nashville were dreadful.

One of the nice surprises though was Brian Gaynor a.k.a. the incredible robot man from S3 auditions. He danced to "Fireflies" this time and it was just as magical as his first audition. I was grinning from ear to ear the whole time. Logistically, it'd be difficult, if not impossible to accommodate Brian on the show, but Nigel promised him and his crew a spot on a future "Dance" episode (I suspect the finale).

For the most part, Nashville was a total flop - a dismal total of seven dancers made it through to Vegas. Ouch.

Vegas Week started and 122 dancers are already feeling the pressure since the judges are only looking for five guys and five girls. Those are intense odds. Vegas breaks down into a few days and several rounds. First up for the contestants were solos.

Both Alex Wong and Billy Bell were finalists last season, but were unable to stay in the competition; Alex because he couldn't get out of a contract with a ballet company and Billy because of an illness.Alex and Billy both got straight through to Vegas and each did extraordinary solos. Needless to say, they're both very talented guys and I suspect (and hope!) we'll be seeing at least one (or both) of them in the competition this year.

Also highlighted during the solo portion was Anthony Borelle. Anthony pulled his hamstring, but still pulled off a gorgeous contemporary solo. His center was flawless and he balanced on his bad leg for what seemed like forever. After the solos, the judges cut 26 dancers, leaving just 96.

Next round was hip-hop with Tabitha Dumo. Sadly, one half of NappyTabs was missing - Napoleon. No worries, though. As far as I could tell from some quick Internet research, the dancing duo is still together and will still be choreographers with "Dance" this season. A quick montage of the hip-hop round revealed that 26 more dancers were cut.

Next round was ballroom, a cha-cha with Toni, who turned out to be a very tough chick. Billy Bell said it best: "She's kind of a Nazi Barbie."

A lot of the dancers seemed to struggle with her routine, including earlier favorite Nicole Knudson. She did a gorgeous audition solo, but was totally ungainly in this number. The judges picked on her for her hair again and proposed that she try again with her hair down, instead that ridiculous bun. It was better the next time around, but I don't think she deserved to go through. The judges disagreed and kept her in the competition.

Jordan Johnson also struggled very much with the cha-cha; it was actually painful to watch at times. I wanted to like him so much, but he just couldn't seem to pick up the choreography. The judges told him to work on his technique and hopefully we'll see him back next year.

Adechike Torbert was the only dancer who had to dance for his life tonight. Despite being a contemporary dancer, he decided to do a tap routine for his first Vegas solo. I'm sorry, but HUH?! It was definitely a big mistake because his contemporary dance was gorgeous: incredible height on his leaps, beautiful technique and quality of movement, and undeniable control. Nigel gave him a pretty harsh scolding, but ultimately let him continue.

All in all, Vegas took the total down to 58 dancers. Next week, we get to see part 2 of Vegas and the Top 10 are revealed. The judges will be going to the dancers's homes this year to tell them their fate. That'll definitely be nerve-wracking for them and devilishly fun for us. Humiliation! In front of family and friends! Can't wait.

Anyone know the artist for the song (I think this is the title) "Lost in this World" that was played during one of the auditions?
