We started with 58 dancers remaining in Vegas and by episode's end we were down to our Top 10 dancers. Vegas Week is fine and all, but the real reason I'm tuning in tonight is to watch the judges tell the dancers first-hand whether they made it or not. That's a lot of pressure on the dancers, being surrounded by their friends and family and not knowing their fate. I could feel the tension from the beginning.
But first, the rest of Vegas Week. Even though Ida Saki blew the judges away in her initial audition, she hadn't done well in Vegas and decided to drop out of the competition. She said she had to get back to college, but to me - and the judges -- it seemed like a total cop-out.
Tyce DiOrio choreographed a peppy, sharp Broadway routine for the rest of the dancers. It was the usual Tyce fluff, and many of the dancers excelled. Most of those highlighted seemed new to me. After B'way, 10 more dancers had been eliminated.
Next up was group routines, which are notoriously bad, but entertaining as hell to watch. It's an interesting concept, but a good dancer does not necessarily a good choreographer make. And throw six or so of them together and it's all kinds of bad news.
The first group pulled the short straw in terms of song choice: "I Want to Know What Love Is." They started with a Fosse-style line where everyone peaked out in a wave and even had some great partnering moments. There was also a nice lift with ballroom dancer Giselle Peacock. It was a little cheesy at times, but the judges loved it and even called it "inspiring." Everyone was safe.
Group 2 looked to be having trouble at rehearsals (I could sense a belly-flop of a routine in the future). The group danced to "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck quartet and did some African-inspired moves, but ultimately fizzled. The dancers were rarely in sync and the whole piece felt scattered. The judges put them in a single line and evaluated them one by one. Kadija, an African dancer, one of the main instigators in the group's fights, made it through. Chris, another one of the fighters in the group, also made it through, but by the skin of his teeth. The rest of the group made it through and tapper Melinda even got a special shoutout from Nigel.
The rest of the group routines flashed by rather quickly in a montage - one of them looked to be "Singin' in the Rain"-inspired, complete with umbrellas - and the rest looked reasonably decent.
The last group epitomized what I was saying earlier about good dancers and good choreographers. The group included Billy Bell, Adechike Torbert and a handful of other judge favorites, and yet the routine was one of the most flat, uninspiring performances we've ever seen on this show. I can't even pick out a memorable moment - that disappointing. Adam called it a "disaster of epic proportions." After a pretty harsh tongue lashing from the rest of the judges, the entire group got a second chance.
The next round was contemporary with Travis Wall. He's made quite a career out of his appearance back in Season 2 (of which he was the runner-up). Most of the remaining dancers were contemporary and totally in their element, but the two remaining ballroom girls were struggling. Christina Santana did a pretty nice job with the routine. Her leaps weren't as high as I would have liked, but she got through the round. Giselle was very calm before she performed, but I'm not entirely sure why - her timing was consistently off and her extensions were pretty pitiful. She was cut. Nicole Knudsen, a.k.a. crazy bun girl, got cut too.
Anthony Borelle, Alex Wong and Kent Boyd were in a group together and there was a lot of pressure - each had been highlighted by the judges previously. Alex made it through, as did Anthony, and after some suspense and a commercial break, so did Kent - all three got unanimous ‘yeses' from the judges.
Grover Dale came to talk to the remaining 24 dancers about being a star. Interesting move on the show's part, since personalities have been sorely lacking in the contestants for the past few seasons. Grover has worked with Gene Kelly and Bob Fosse and is quite a legend himself. Next up was one final round of solos before the judges made their picks.
Lauren Froderman started off the solos and set the bar pretty high. I wasn't impressed with her initial audition (I'm pretty sure she was one of the contemporary girls I counted out this season), but I might have been wrong. She did a beautifully controlled routine to "At Last." It was cute, funny when it needed to be, and sexy as hell. She got a standing ovation from half of the judges. The remaining 23 solos flashed by in montage form-they all looked pretty solid. We seem to have a pretty good mix of styles this year - contemporary, ballroom, b-boys, and even a tapper.
Then we got to see peoples' hopes and dreams either come true or get crushed ... in front of their family members, as in a departure for this show, the judges went to the contestants' homes instead of having them walk the long hallway to final judgment. There were tears for many, but excitement for others. Nigel went on a great search for Wapakoneta, Ohio (where Kent Boyd lives) and even had a brief run-in with the police along the way. I'll spare you a recap of every single moment and get right to the dancers picked for the Top 10:
The surprises weren't over for the episode, as in a last minute decision, the judges opened a spot up for a sixth guy, making our Top 10 dancers a group of 11.
So there they are everybody, your Top 11 dancers. Guess this season will be a bit longer than expected. All in all, we've got 8 contemporary dancers, 1 ballroom dancer, a b-boy and a tapper. Not a great mix, but the show usually has a slew of contemporary dancers, so I can't say I'm surprised. And with only 10 spots this year, it must have been harder than ever to create diversity.
Tomorrow we get to see the Top 11 highlighted in a special episode and from there on out, they'll be paired with All Stars. I can't wait to see how the two groups get along. Definitely a strong crop of dancers this year.

I think the talent level this season looks to be overall higher than last season, but I am concerned that there aren't that many stand-outs yet (aside from Billy and Alex, who I think are very, very strong). Then again, Kathryn and Jakob were total unknowns at this point last season, and they were incredible dancers who went on to place third and second, respectively. We'll know more after tomorrow night's exhibition round.
I will say that I am EXTREMELY disappointed by the serious lack of diversity among the dancers. Going from Top 20 to Top 10 (OK, Top 11) should have made the judges work even harder to get a good mix of styles. Instead fully 70 percent of this group is contemporary. You're telling me not ONE decent male ballroom dancer entered this competition? We only have ONE hip-hop dancer total in the mix? Those two styles (and their many variations) tend to make up half of each performance show at least.
I am particularly concerned about the hip-hop. I haven't been impressed by what I've seen of Jose -- certainly he's got a lot to live up to after Legacy and Russell last season. I'm similarly not sold on Christina, who can dance, but lacks sparkle. The ones to watch, for me, are Lauren (a real surprise; I thought I'd hate her but I find her endearing), Melinda (I'm actually less impressed by her tapping than I am her other abilities), Alex, Ade, Billy, and Kent, who will almost certainly be a monster vote-grabber a la Evan in S5. Rob could also pull in some big tween votes for being this season's eye candy.
I will end by saying that I think it's unfortunate that the producers decided to turn the Top 10 into the Top 11 by stacking it with yet another male contemporary dancer. This show -- and America's votes -- seem increasingly biased toward cute male dancers (there's a reason only two women have won this show in six years, both of them shock victories). I expect the women to get picked off fairly quickly once voting starts, which will of course backfire for the whole "all-star" concept. As soon as all the lady dancers dry up there will be no reason for Pasha, Neil, Twitch, or Mark to still be on the stage.

I agree Eric. I understand why contemporary dancers tend to fare better in some of the Vegas rounds -- basic contemporary technique is important as a foundation for other forms of dance -- but we get it already. Plus lots of hip-hop dancers have surprised us in the past (I never expected Legacy or Russell to do as well as they did) and look at some of the ballroom stars that have emerged from the show: Pasha, Anya, Dmitry, even Benji and Lacey just to name a few.
Also, did anyone else think the "Top 10 (11) Reveal" bit went on WAAAAY too long? I think that's probably why I didn't even notice how many contemporary dancers there were at first. And the bad news was delivered to dancers via phone for the most part. Disappointing.
Still, we definitely have some talent this year. My only addition to your standout list would be Alexie. There's something charming and pure about her. She also reminds me a bit of Elenore from last season.

I cannot believe Anthony Borelle was not picked for the top 10. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Not sure I want to watch it now. They have picked some dancers that are not even worthy or not as good as some they said NO to. IN SHOCK and DISAPPOINTED!!!

I totally agree with you Liz. I was very disappointed that Anthony Borelle didn't make the cut especially with all of the pain he endured from his pulled hamstring during Vegas Week. I think his strong masculine presence would've added diversity to the contemporary dancers. And to add insult to injury, they picked an 11th dancer. I think their choices were based on popularity, not talent. VERY DISAPPOINTED!

why didn't you have 11 girls, that's not fair who is the 11th boy suppose to dance with.Leave the show alone it is fine the way is was.
Eric said on Jun. 10, 2010 at 11:58am
Sharon, just a clarification: None of the Top 11 will be dancing with any other member of the Top 11. They will be paired up each week with an "all-star" dancer from seasons past, and the current competitors will dance in the all-star's style. So the fact that there are 11 dancers as opposed to 10 doesn't matter; they'll all be picking a different "all-star" partner each week from here on out.

Anthony is one of the best male dancers in my opinion. I don't understand why they didn't pick him for season 7. Was a reason given and not shown on lastnight's episode. I am so baffled.

tHIS MAY BE THE BEST SEASON EVER...aND i WAS SO BLOWN AWAY BY kENT. I just wanted to give him a big hug last night. With a little self confidence, I think he could definitly make it at least to the top five.
p.s. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!

I really dislike the idea of the All Stars partners. One of the appeals of this, over DWTS, which I also watch, is the way chemistry can develop between the dancers as they work together to learn new styles, which raises their performance level. And it's always cool when semi-good dancers get great after their former partners get sent home and they get paired with someone else they connect with better.
Margie said on Jun. 16, 2010 at 8:36pm
I agree with JoAnn. I find them distracting and forget who I should be watching. I really like the number at 20. I also agree with one of the other comments about watching each judge going in cars to speak with the contestants that made the final 10. That's why I really don't like reality shows and never watch them. To me this should be a talent show and not a reality show.
Peach said on Jun. 18, 2010 at 1:42pm
Ever since Anthony never made it in the top 10/11 I feel like watching the show is pointless. How can you choose dancers who need to time to "grow" in their talent, and place them on a show based on the premise that those trying out have to be at the top of their game talent wise? The comments from the judges alone proved that he was practically far too talented to even be in the competition - male or female, he was the best dancer this season - and yet those with poor extensions and other technical flaws made it to the top spots? This is the biggest "rigging" since Bush was voted into office!

Kent is so talented. I voted for him 50 times the other night, i counted! It's so cool to vote for and watch fellow dancers! I love you Kent! Keep on rocking the stage!
