I've had a love-hate relationship with "SYTYCD" this season. As of last week, we weren't even on speaking terms. But I'm ready to move on if you are, "Dance." Just please, no more bullshit. OK? OK. Let's get to tonight's show then, shall we?
Like last week, the opening "meet your dancers" segment was unusual. Ashley was nowhere to be seen. For a second week in a row, another contestant was injured. I swear this season is jinxed or something. Cat told us that Ashley had gone to the hospital with sore ribs after Monday's rehearsal. It sounded less serious (and more vague) than Alex's injury last week, but Ashley wasn't even sitting in the audience to watch (or at least they didn't show her). I really hope it's not serious. We're already down to two girls. We can't afford to lose another one at this point. [Edit note: I have read that she broke one of her ribs. -ER]
Lauren got paired with all-star Mark for a new cultural style of dance: Tahitian. The number, choreographed by Tiana Liufau, featured hip shaking - and lots of it. There was a combination of wicked fast side-to-side action (which was visually stunning with their costumes) and slower, smooth hip rotations, but not much else to the routine. Like I said though, the costumes were way cool: feathers galore! Each of them was wearing a big-ass feather headdress that looked cool, but made it hard to see if they had a connection with one another (their faces were almost totally obscured). The judges didn't add much in terms of critique, other than saying they weren't sure if it was technically correct (neither do I). They did say it was fun to watch though. I don't know if America will know what to make of this routine (I still don't).
AdeChike got paired with Anya for an incredibly difficult salsa routine with new choreographers Liz Lira and Danny Davalos. Both the outfits and choreography in this routine were ridiculous. AdeChike got stuck in ill-fitted blue pants while Anya's "matching" costume was a short, fringe-covered lime green number. No, no costume department! The routine was chock full of tricks that seemed cool in concept, but weren't always executed well (although that first horizontal flip was sick!). With the level of difficulty in this routine, I think AdeChike carried it off pretty well. He lost his face in one place, I think (when Anya was sliding down his leg), but not bad. I also thought his footwork was pretty sharp. The judges mostly praised the choreography, but did commend AdeChike for his effort in the routine.
Jose picked a Joey Dowling B'way routine with all-star Courtney set to "Mr. Cellophane" from "Chicago." What a disaster! It was about a stagehand (Jose) in love with the lead dancer (Courtney), but didn't offer anything for the audience. Joey hardly gave either dancer any choreography. Jose basically stared pitifully at Courtney while she shook her be-feathered butt everywhere. Even when he did have steps to do, they lacked any refinement or finish to his lines (something Adam pointed out). He barely got any height at all on his barrel turns or his broken ankles. It made me think back to how good S5's Evan was at that stuff - it was definitely his signature move. The judges finally reamed him (thank GOD!), saying his technique was crap. Mia even said, "the pathetic-ness was maxed out." But the judges still said they liked him. I give up, judges. I really don't know what you see in this kid. Here's hoping he finally gets the boot!
Travis Wall choreographed a contemporary routine about his mom for Robert and all-starAllison. I thought the costumes on this were perfect, especially Robert, who was wearing khaki shorts and a blue plaid top - totally Travis. The choreography was tender and loving and Robert performed the hell out of it. Both of them had gorgeous lines and plenty of emotion to carry off the piece. It ended with Robert taking Allison's arm over his shoulder, and moving her feet with his. Everyone was in tears - Robert, Allison, Travis, the judges, and Robert's mom (who was in the audience - aw). Nigel said it was emotional and the best he's seen Robert dance this season (true) and Mia broke down during her critique (her mom passed away recently, so it was crazy emotional for her, I'm sure). The best comment though came from Adam Shankman: "I just blew a snot bubble on national TV." Hah! This will likely be a solid vote-getter, much like Tyce's cancer routine in S5 and "Time" with Lacey and Neil from S3.
Anya got a real workout tonight, performing a second routine: a jive with Billy. Although his arms were a bit lax in places, I thought Billy's footwork was pretty strong. Both of their energy was through the roof too, which is crucial for this style. Billy was definitely trying to up his chemistry with Anya, which I actually thought was pretty good by the end of the number. The judges critiques were pretty positive, but Nigel warned Billy to lose some of his technique sometimes, get down and get funky. I can see that, but I still really enjoyed this number. Loads of fun.
"Dance" heartthrobs Kent and Neil got a Tasty Oreo (Tyce DiOrio) B'way routine to something from "Damn Yankees." Again, this was a routine packed with tricks, starting with Kent leap-frogging over Neil big time (so much height!). Both Kent and Neil did a few series of side-by-side flips and even did some choreography with baseball bats. The best part of the routine though was at the end when Kent did a bunch (five, six, seven?) hopping pirouettes into a front suicide flip while Neil did chenees and split leaps around him. Awesome. The judges gave Kent loads of praise and he'll have no trouble getting through again, 'specially since he had Neil on his side this time.
Lauren and Billy got a Mandy Moore routine about two pairs of shoes that meet and just want to boogie down together. Appropriately set to "Boogie Shoes," the routine just put a huge grin on my face from beginning to end. Both dancers executed a ton of sharp, fun footwork in their sparkly Converse. From the Charleston to Susie-Q's, the number oozed adorable-ness. And Billy had fun with some of the steps and let go of some of his technique. He did almost let go of Lauren in the beginning during a lift (anyone else catch that?), but he redeemed himself with the other couple of lift sequences. The judges ate up this cutesy, bubble gum routine and I suspect America will too.
The show lobbed Jose a slow-pitch softball for his second number, a b-boy routine with Dominic. UGH. Is it just me or are the judges rallying harder than ever for this guy? This routine was basically tailored to his style because, well frankly, he can't do much else. Hell, he's not even that spectacular of a b-boy. But much to my chagrin, the routine started off with some cool moves as both of them slid diagonally across the stage. Didn't stay that way though. Even though they started off pretty in-sync, Jose quickly fell out of rhythm with Dominic, noticeably so when they stood up to do a hip-hop portion. His windmills also seemed sloppy to me, especially next to Dominic (who, much as he annoys me, is actually a decent b-boy). The judges said he totally redeemed himself (no) and blew more sunshine up his ass. Please, America! Don't be fooled by the judges' bias. Jose's the low-man on the totem pole talent-wise this season. He's had a HELL of a run (an incredibly lucky one), but it's time for that to come to an end.
AdeChike and Kent got a contemporary routine with Dee Caspero, who admitted he was nervous for the all-male duet. Understandable. In that situation, the dancing really needs to be masculine. This routine, which was about a guy in a toxic relationship (Kent) and his buddy who was trying to talk him out of it (AdeChike). I didn't really get that at all from the routine (lost in translation, I guess), but I did enjoy the number. It had great vulnerability and technique from both of them. I think AdeChike upstaged Kent though, especially when he SOARED over him with a stag leap. Gorgeous. Good comments from the judges for both of them.
Robert was paired with Ashley initially for a disco routine, but on account of her injury, all-star Kathryn stepped in to help out. Disco is admittedly not my favorite style (it was before my time), but this was pretty fun. Totally cheesy, but fun. Robert nailed the lifts, but pulled his face to dangerous levels. He also kept doing these weird head snaps and bobbing his head like a chicken. Yikes. I was really impressed by Kathryn though, who picked up the routine incredibly quick and was a dream on that stage. The judges said Robert was great (he was so-so), although Mia criticized him for not being masculine enough. I agree.
Bottom 3 predictions: well, bottom 2 predictions, because Ashley's already in danger tomorrow. Jose is undoubtedly the weakest dancer in the competition and after tonight's TRAINWRECK of a B'way routine, needs to be sent home. I also think after what went down last week, there's a strong front against him. Although they both had strong performances tonight, I think either Billy or Robert will round out the Bottom 3. Both have already been there before. Billy's star has been fading fast and even though he picked up his performance level tonight, I don't know if it'll be enough. I really hope Ashley is well enough to dance next week. We can't lose ANOTHER girl ... we just can't. Especially when Jose is still here. I'm SO sick of him at this point.

I'll go dancer by dancer:
-Lauren was great in the jazz routine -- I really enjoy watching her dance; she just seems so joyful -- but I don't know what to make of the Tahitian number. It was interesting, the hip shaking was impressive, but it was extremely repetitive (at least to my untrained eye). At least we got to see delicious Mark in his delicious shirtlessness with his delicious faux tattoo.
-Billy was overpraised in his jive, I think. It was better, I guess, but still not great. The big problem for me: Billy cannot do sexy. At all. He's not believable in any kind of romantic/sexual way, which sucks for him. He was great in the jazz piece, though.
-Kent acquitted himself really well tonight; it made me feel a little better about what is almost certainly his impending victory in this competition (effing Nigel even told him so). He should absolutely go to Broadway once this is all over. His mugging and dialed-to-11 energy will make him a perfect B'way boy. I also didn't get the story in the contemporary number with Adechike.
-Robert was great in the Travis piece, and totally over the top and a little clumsy in disco -- but I still loved it. I love disco. I love Doriana Sanchez. I love that hot bitch Kathryn. I just LOVED IT. Made me happy to watch it. I think that the Travis piece could be a real sea change for Robert; if America hooks on to that routine the way the judges expect it to, his momentum could change for the better.
-I actually think Adechike is a dead man walking at this point. I know that the salsa was SUPER hard -- hardest we've ever seen on this show -- but I didn't think it was at all well executed. He was good in the contemporary number, but at this point he's probably the most disposable dancer left. I also thought it was fascinating how Mia said that she prayed for him to have a good week. Read between the lines: Mia knew that if she criticized him again this week people would be calling her racist for a third week in a row. Make no mistake; these guys pay close attention to what is said about them online.
-Jose is actually ruining this season for me. I was screaming at the television during both of his numbers. That Broadway number was a disaster -- he was given VERY little to do, and couldn't even do THAT right. His "acting" was pathetic, but I don't mean the character -- I mean his performance level. Vacant, dead expression. I actually questioned whether the kid had a soul. The judges fell all over themselves saying how much they hated being mean to him -- they weren't being mean, they were doing their JOBS -- and yet seem to have no problem ripping several of those other dancers to shreds every week. Do. Not. Get.
And then the b-boy routine! Before it started I said, "I hope he chokes on this; it would be the final nail in his coffin." He didn't choke completely, but Dominic destroyed him on that stage. There was a point where they were doing side-by-side spins on the floor, and the gigantic disparity in their abilities was brutally apparent. Was that mentioned by the judges? Not even a little bit. They acted like he held his own and "redeemed" himself. Garbage. If he ends up surviving tomorrow night I will be seriously annoyed at the judges, because at this point they are pushing him through this competition for reasons I will never be able to decipher. He's uninspiring as a dancer, dull as a personality, and the constant purring over his sweetness is leaving a bitter taste in my mouth at this point.

I think you could be right about AdeChike, unfortunately. I don't think he's the worst dancers left on the show (*cough Jose cough cough*), but he hasn't done a ton to stand out. He got saved last week because people were pissed at Mia's comments, not because people necessarily like him.
I'm still really hoping voters will FINALLY get it right this week and send Jose home. What's most upsetting is that even after last week, the judges are still showing serious favoritism toward Jose (giving him a B-boy routine and trying to pass it off as legit by saying "it's the first ever!" Please.) Nigel's taking it to dangerous levels and even admitted in an interview with TV Guide (and on last night's show) that the judges have been too easy on Jose this season. The most egregious part? He then turned around and tried to defend the judges' behavior by saying this:
"Dancing isn't about technique," Lythgoe adds. "Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly would never be stars if it was about technique. Neither of them had great technique; they had charisma and Jose has incredible charisma."
Um, BULL. SHIT. I can't believe he would insult Fred & Gene like that. Both of them did have a remarkable amount of charisma, BUT they could also dance. And therein lies the problem with Jose: he can't.
Aaaaaaand *end rant*
