It was another emotional week here on "SYTYCD" as another dancer fell victim to an injury. Ashley, whose star was just on the rise, hurt her ribs during Monday's rehearsal, leading many to call this season cursed. I'm starting to believe it too.
The opening number was a Broadway number set to "Billion Dollar Baby" that featured both the constants and the all-stars. There are so few dancers left, I guess they needed to fill the extra space on the gargantuan stage. The routine was pretty chaotic, and I wasn't ever sure who I was supposed to be watching. Ultimately, my eyes went straight to the all-stars: Dominic mugged for the camera badly as usual, Kathryn & Lauren Gottlieb did a series of amazing side-by-side kicks and Anya did her sexy face while being dragged across stage on a chez lounge. Kent had a couple of spotlight moments with flips, but otherwise, I didn't notice ANY S7 dancers. Still, the number was a definite improvement over the other opening numbers we've seen this season. Good use of the stage and some nice moments. Kudos, Tasty Oreo. I didn't know you had it in you.
Cat was looking a bit ragged tonight and that yellow dress did nothing for her complexion. We got a video plug for Dance Day and got to see lots of people trying it. Some picked up to choreography well, but not everyone. Still, people seem to be having fun and the House of Reps will be doing the NappyTabs routine in D.C. Awesome.
Then it was down to business: the first two contestants to get their results were Lauren and Kent, both of whom should have been safe after last night's performance. Lauren's Tahitian number was repetitive, but nicely done and her jazz routine with Billy was one of my favorites of the night, if not the season. I was blown away by Kent in his baseball Broadway routine with Neil and thought he fared pretty well in his more morose contemporary routine with AdeChike. Cat played a bit of a trick when reading the results before revealing both were safe. Hooray!
We got the first round of guest performances early tonight with two young students from Mary Murphy's dance academy performing a jive (?) to "Jailhouse Rock." From my eyes, their footwork was pretty sharp. Their arms were a bit awkward at times, but at ages 10 and 11, I think that's totally excusable. And it was a fun, upbeat routine that helped break up the show's standard, sometimes stale structure.
Next two dancers: Billy and AdeChike. Knowing how the show formats their results shows, one of these guys has to be in the bottom. Both guys had half and half nights: AdeChike had some trouble with his cha-cha, but rocked his contemporary routine and Billy did okay in his jive and stellar in his jazz. But Billy landed in the bottom. The audience doesn't seem to be connecting with him (although he did better performance-wise last night) and his star power is fading fast.
Last two dancers: Jose and Robert. Jose did pretty much NOTHING in his Broadway routine and when he did, he didn't execute the steps well at all. He got babied with a b-boy routine, in which Dominic pretty much schooled him. As Eric said yesterday, he is totally ruining this season for me. Robert's disco was totally cheesy, but his contemporary routine with Allison about Travis Wall's mother was beautiful and brought the whole studio to tears last night. I was legitamately holding my breath, praying for Jose to be in the bottom when Cat took us to a commercial break. Dammit, Cat. You're going to make me pass out. It was worth the wooziness though - Jose was finally put in his place: the Bottom 3!!! YESSSSSS! (pause for my happy dance). When Adam asked how Jose felt about still being in the competition, he said "honored." Damn right, kiddo.
From the Alvin Ailey studio, we got to see an incredible contemporary routine by two dancers whose names I didn't catch. The guy was a total predator with his movements. At one point he practically did a backbend, then slowly pulled his body up and over the tops of his toes. Brilliant. The woman had solid technique too, of course, but the guy really dominated the routine. That seemed to be the point though so I was cool with it.
The all-star performance tonight was "Forever" by S4's Comfort and Twitch. It wasn't one of those routines that initially stuck out in my mind, but it was definitely enjoyable to watch. I wasn't blown away, but it was fine. I am amazed, however, at how much Comfort has grown as a dancer since S4. She really seemed to be having a ball on stage.
Both of tonight's solos were disappointing tonight. Billy's solo showed off his lines and extension and was lovely as always. But I really needed him to do something different. I wanted him to surprise me and he didn't. Jose didn't surprise me with solo either. The first half consisted of him making faces at the audience and clumsily bouncing back and forth. He didn't even get down to breaking until the last 10 seconds and even then, it felt pretty half-hearted. He looked PISSED as hell afterwards and wouldn't even warm up to Cat after the routine.
Tonight's musical guest was Christina Perri, who up until a few weeks ago was a waitress and aspiring singer. After Stacey Tookey used her song "Jar of Hearts" for a contemporary routine with Billy and Kathryn, the song started selling left and right. She sounded anxious and a bit raspy during the performance, but I can understand. To go from a complete unknown to this size of an audience must be crazy nerve-wracking. Her piano took half the stage while Neil and Allison danced beautifully on the other half.
Results time: Again, I was holding my breath the whole time, praying the doctors would clear Ashley and send Jose packing. Sadly, that didn't happen, and for the second week in a row, an injury took out another contestant. If we've learned anything from these past couple weeks, it's that a dancer's life is fragile and short. This show is very demanding and honestly any of these dancers could have had the same bad luck as Ashley and Alex.
Ashley's elimination also meant that we're down to just one girl (Damn!) and that Jose will be "dancing" for another week (DOUBLE DAMN!). I wonder if there's a "Showgirls" situation and someone's sabotaging these dancers backstage or something to get to the top. Just kidding. Although it doesn't sound totally unlikely, does it? After all, it worked for Elizabeth Berkley. Well, at least for her character.

It's not the House of Representatives who will be dancing (that we know of) - it's a group OUTSIDE dancing outside the Congressional building in D.C.

Ah, bummer. I was looking forward to seeing Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand bust a move ... Oh well.

Kathy, nice synopsis. I totally agree...another week of Jose...B-U-M-M-E-R! Where's the integrity of dance by having him on the show? I say he's next, then AdeChike, then we'll have an all-star bunch (which should have also included Alex and Ashley, of course). And too bad there's no Chuck and Kirsten salsa in the making.

Hey guys, what about Lauren? Doesn't anyone think she doing an amazing job? I actually liked Kent's Damn Yankees performance with Neil- it was mature, great technique and just plain fun. I was really getting kind of tire of his goofy facial expressions.

PJ - totally agree, although I think Billy could be in trouble too, sadly. He's been in the bottom 3 times already. It can't be for lack of talented (the kid's moves are sick!), but it doesn't seem like he's got a strong fan base.
Phyllis - Lauren's great. I was looking back on all of the routines she's done and I don't think she's made any missteps. The Tahitian routine wasn't my favorite, but she definitely shook her little tuches off. I think Adam was right, she's a serious contender and the boys should be scared.

As respectful as I can be I believe that everyone who has stated that Robert is arrogant is SOOOO very right on. And I believe two weeks ago when he ambushed Ashley about her feelings for him in front of millions of people; well what do you think??? So did she get an injury trying to stay as far away as possible from his evilness? I can only hope that both Lauren & Kent have shown that they have the stuff to be numero uno!!!!!
