Innovative activities at RMSC

As February break grinds on, you're likely starting to hear that familiar summertime refrain, "I'm bored." A trip to Rochester Museum and Science Center will end your suffering.

At RMSC, kids can explore high points of Rochester innovation with special activities through February 23, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Early Rochester luminaries including Frederick Douglass, Edward Bausch, and George Eastman will be on hand to remind us that better living through science isn't limited to pharmaceuticals.

Kids can make a pinhole camera and telescope to examine the science behind Rochester's emergence as the image capital of the world. The Inventor's Challenge lets kids test their creativity as they use yesterday's tools and technology to solve today's problems. It's sort of like using my old '70s harvest gold oven to make tonight's dinner.

Other activities include guided tours of Rochester history exhibits and a demonstration of the North Star printing press in the Rochester's Frederick Douglass exhibit. A nice tie-in with Black History Month.

February break activities are free with museum admission of $9 for adults, $7 for ages 3 through 18, free for kids under 3.

While you're at it, let RMSC show you the money with the new interactive touring exhibit Moneyville. It'll help kids understand what money is and how it works while building math skills and economic literacy. Rest assured that no money trees were harmed in the making of this exhibit. Info at www.rmsc.org or call 271-4320.
