This Father's Day, go retro - really retro. Spend a day in the 19th century at Genesee Country Village and Museum. There are loads of activities planned to keep dads amused.
Even in the 19th century, dads loved sports. Join in a game of 1864 baseball with members of GCVM's gentlemen and ladies teams at Silver Baseball Park at 1:30 p.m. See how baseball then compares to baseball now. Try other olde timey sports and games, too, and make a Chicago-style baseball cap.
After playtime, it's back to work for dad. Well, sort of - have fun passing on your construction skills to the next generation as your family transforms cardboard boxes into replicas of historic village buildings. Paint, brushes, and markers will be provided between noon-4 p.m. Friendly museum staff will help create doors and windows. No need to worry about plumbing!
Of course, dads are no strangers to melodrama. Let the kids see how the pros do it. "A Dastardly Proposal," GCVM's original melodrama about a young girl facing the loss of her childhood home, will be performed at the Davis Opera House at 12:30 & 3 p.m. The Genesee Harmonic Society will sing folk songs from around the world at the Brooks Grove Church at 2 p.m.
Father's Day activities run Sunday, June 17, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. GCVM is located in Mumford, about 20 miles from downtown. Adult admission is $14, youth ages 4-16 are $8, free for kids 3 and under, but Dads get in free. Info at www.gcv.org or call 538-6822.
