Summer vacation is here. Lazy afternoons with nothing to do, kids say. It's time for some structure, you say. But it's too hot, they say. And you say: not too hot for swimming lessons.
The city of Rochester is conducting a Summer Swim Academy, and the best part is the cost: it's free. Children ages 6 to 14 can participate and earn Red Cross certification in five skill levels. Recruits (Level I) have had no previous instruction; Seamates (Level II) will work on primary skills; Boatswains (Level III) should be able to dive into deep water and swim 25 yards; Navigators (Level IV) will work on stroke development; Skippers (Level V) will work on stroke refinement.
The 30-minute classes will be held weekdays 9:30 a.m.-noon, during two sessions, July 9-26, and July 30-August 16.
Applications are available at all city recreation centers and libraries. Advanced registration is closed for the first session (you have until July 21 for session two) but a drop-in enrollment period will take place June 27-29, 9:30 a.m.-noon at the location where a student plans to take lessons. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, based on skill levels and availability. Swim Academy is open to non-city residents, but city residents get priority.
Lessons for all five skill levels will be held at the Adams Street Community Center, Franklin High School, East High School, Genesee Valley Park, James Monroe High School, Thomas Jefferson High School, and John Marshall High School. Lessons for Level I and II only will be held at Avenue D Community Center, Flint Street Community Center, and North Street Community Center.
