Our bodies, our selves

The old saying goes that beauty is skin deep. But a different kind of beauty exists underneath the skin, as evidenced by the Rochester Museum & Science Center's new traveling exhibit "Our Body: The Universe Within." The exhibit showcases the human body stripped down to its remarkable components, a spectacular sight indeed.

Spectacular - and a little disquieting at first. The show features 75 anatomical displays that show the human body in various levels of anatomical detail. Put together they offer a realistic look at how the body's musculature works, how the skeletal structure fits together, and up-close glimpses at organs like the brain.

In addition to the lifelike replicas, the show includes 12 actual human specimens that have been preserved through a process that replaces fluids with polymers to prevent decay. In conjunction with the show the RMSC's Strasenburgh Planetarium will begin screening the giant-screen film "The Human Body."

"Our Body" and "The Human Body" both debut Saturday, September 1; the exhibit runs through January 1. The exhibit features an additional admission charge of $17 for children 3-18, seniors, and college students; $20 for adults; and $16 for RMSC members. Combination exhibit/movie tickets cost $16-$24.

The RMSC is located at 657 East Ave. Museum hours are Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday noon-5 p.m. Museum admission costs $6-$8. For more information call 271-1880 or visit www.rmsc.org.
