If your kid loves dinosaurs - and really, what kid doesn't? - they won't want to miss the newest film at the Rochester Museum & Science Center's Strasenburgh Planetarium. "Dinosaurs Alive!," narrated by Michael Douglas, offers a fresh look at what life as a dinosaur was really all about.

Filmmakers recreated the prehistoric world in an effort to bring viewers closer than ever before to what life was like for the ancient creatures. Using the latest fossil evidence as a template, state-of-the-art CGI technology was utilized to animate dinos such as Tarbosaurus (a close relative of the T-Rex), Codlophysis, Protoceratops, Seismosaurus, and Confuciusornis. The result is a visual experience that is realistic, scientifically accurate, and awe-inspiring.

The film also focuses on how fossil finds are pieced together to unlock the secrets of ancient dinosaur life; the CGI segments are blended with paleontological dig site footage for a total educational experience. Historical 1920's documentary footage takes the audience on a journey to Mongolia with American Museum of Natural History paleontologists (including Roy Chapman Andrews, thought to be the inspiration for the Indiana Jones character) for their discovery of one of the largest dinosaur graveyards in the world. Adventures also include a jaunt to New Mexico for a massive fossil discovery, and a harrowing excursion across the Gobi Desert with a team of grad students hunting for dinosaur fossils.

Discover how current paleontological practices, mixed with a timeline of pivotal discoveries, have allowed us to understand dinosaurs, as well as find out which descendents of the first dinosaurs still may walk or fly among us.

"Dinosaurs Alive!" is now playing at the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium, 657 East Avenue. Admission costs $7-$9; RMSC members and children under 3 are free. Go to rmsc.org for ongoing show times.
