Mr. Claus has traded in his reindeer for an iron horse, and you're invited along for the ride. Anyone mourning the loss of rides on Midtown's monorail, or wanting to avoid the holiday-induced insanity of screaming children at the mall, or just looking to create a one-of-a-kind family holiday memory, listen up. People of the world, it's time to join in, on the Santa Train.
Santa Trains have been around for ages, and there are many to choose from within easy driving distance from Rochester. Several regional organizations offer these one- or two-hour excursions powered by engines ranging from sleek World War II-era diesel locomotives to the 1920's-built antique steam variety. Whichever you choose, one thing is for certain: your kids can enjoy the magic and wonder of rail travel, and you will delight in not having to endure hours in line just for little Ralphie to get a shot at telling Santa about that Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle he so desperately wants. A definite win all around.
The jolly big man himself is always present and accounted for on the train, oftentimes along with Mrs. Claus, and there is plenty of holiday cheer to share as you chug through the picturesque New York countryside. Holiday carols are a tradition, hot chocolate is often flowing, and the bewitching atmosphere will truly create a memory that your kids will keep with them as they grow into adulthood.
Fans of perennial holiday favorite "It's a Wonderful Life" take note: Finger Lakes Scenic Railway is running a special holiday train excursion to coincide with the "It's a Wonderful Life" event hosted by the Village of Seneca Falls, which heralds itself as "The Real Bedford Falls" and the inspiration for ol' George Bailey's hometown.
