So you've gone and spent all your summer earnings on a new fall wardrobe, dropped major bank on textbooks, and likely sank into debt to fill the gas tank. Fortunately, you can get your art fix for free this fall, at a number of (admission free!) venues on the campuses of the many colleges and universities in the area. Not only do these galleries show off the work of the students and faculty, they also often host visiting artists, clearly benefiting the students and our greater community beyond the campus. Many of the school galleries were closed for the summer, but the new school year heralds a fresh line-up of exhibitions, too. These are just a few of the autumnal art offerings; check City Newspaper every Wednesday for a more comprehensive list of current exhibitions, or visit rochestercitynewspaper.com.

Ceramics professor Alice Drew will exhibit her work, along with that of her father and two sisters, in a group show called "The Barry Family," on display through September 30 at Roberts Wesleyan College's Davison Gallery. According to curator Katherine Page, the range of media and styles "explores what it means to share a common bond and a lifetime of shared experiences  -- the frustrations and joys that define family and studio life." In October, the gallery will show photography by Nicola Kauntoupes, whose past work has included hand-printing on fragile phyllo dough, and photographing the process of its deterioration, in order to comment on the fragility of memory. Also included in the show will be shots from Toni Pepe, whose distinct style and narrative fragments evoke film noir.  (Roberts Cultural Life Center, Roberts Wesleyan College. Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday 1-4 p.m. 594-6120, roberts.edu/DavisonGallery.)

Currently on exhibition at the DyerArtsCenter is "Exploring Science Fiction" by Eddie Swayze, a Rochester poet, performing artist, actor, musician, and visual artist who attended RIT and then taught in the art and literature departments there. From September 21 to November 10 the gallery will exhibit "Betty Miller, A Retrospective," including De'VIA (short for Deaf View/Image Art), which "uses formal art elements with the intention of expressing innate cultural or physical Deaf experience [...] and Deaf insight in relationship with the environment" (per the De'VIA website). November 17 to January 5 brings a show of the NTID Permanent Studies Collection of Art, including drawings by Morris Broderson, a world-renowned deaf artist whose largely figurative and floral work draws from historical, literary, mythological, and religious themes.  (National Institute for the Deaf, RIT Campus. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m., Saturday 1-3 p.m.475-6884, ntid.rit.edu/dyerarts.)

Showing through October 5 at the University of Rochester's Hartnett Gallery is Danielle Rantel's "You Are Full of Magic," a collection of drawings and works on paper that are infused with biological, decorative, and feminine imagery, as well as references to music, science, and Eastern philosophy. (Wilson Commons, University of Rochester River Campus. Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday-Sunday noon-5 p.m. 275-4188, sa.rochester.edu/Hartnett.)

Catch "Perfectly...Useless," work by Jim Hill, up until September 27 at Nazareth College's Colacino Gallery. I'm eager to see new art by my former professor Maureen Brilla, who, heavily versed in symbolic language, creates small and meticulous paintings that pull from the personal. Her show "In Thanks for a Thumb", will be up October 3-25. From November 6 to 15, check out "Saturday Art for Kids," a showing of work by the participants in Nazareth's youth art program. (Nazareth College Arts Center, 4245 East Ave. Wednesday-Saturday, noon-4 p.m. 398-2532.)

Sure, she assigns and critiques, but what does the professor's' work look like? Find out at MCC's Faculty Art Exhibition, showing until October 3 at the Mercer Gallery. Hear that? That's the rasp of art students rubbing their hands together and grinning. Next up is an exhibit of drawings and sculptures by Peter Jemison, a member of the Heron clan of the Seneca, manager of the historic Haudenosaunee site Ganondagan in Victor, and direct descendent of Mary Jemison.  Crucially linking us to the past and our local history, Jemison is also known for his naturalistic paintings. His work can be seen from October 10 to November 7. After that you can view Daniel Fisher's "From the Attic" from November 14 to December 12. (Monroe Community College, 1000 E Henrietta Rd. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. 292-2021, monroecc.edu/go/mercer.)
