FALL GUIDE '08: Classical Preview

Haunting melodies

In Henry James' novella "The Turn of the Screw," two children living in a rambling, isolated mansion are haunted by a couple of ghosts. As the plot unfolds, their governess becomes convinced that the specters are using the kids to continue their paranormal relationship into the present.

Like that big, old house, Rochester's fall classical season seems to be under the spell of two ghosts. They're friendly ones: the Spirit of Early Music and the Specter of Old Favorites. Explorers seeking new treasure are advised to check upstairs in the attic or under the stairwells for small pockets of dissonance. Elsewhere, the ghosts rule. The main rooms are well lit, harmonious, and furnished in a fusion of 18th and 19th century styles.

The Spirit of Early Music will rejoice at the installation of a glorious new pipe organ. Eastman faculty will unveil the Craighead-Saunders Organ at Christ Church during an annual festival (October 16-20) with concerts featuring Stephen Kennedy's polished choral group Schola Cantorum and the Rochester City Ballet. What makes the instrument notable, besides its stunning appearance, is the provenance. It's a reconstruction of a massive 1776 organ in Vilnius, Lithuania and, according to project director Hans Davidssohn, it will make Rochester the place to perform, hear, and record music of J.S. Bach.

The Boston Early Music Festival Chamber Ensemble will appear in Rochester for the first time on Tuesday, October 14, to play in Kilbourn Hall. The group, led by lutenist-extraordinaire Paul O'Dette, will also perform Bach on Friday, October 17, at Christ Church. Later in the month (October 31, November 1-2) Pegasus Early Music will offer exquisite pieces by Luzzaschi, Monterverdi, Rossi, and others. The enchantment extends into November with the Rochester Early Music Festival, held at St. Anne's on November 7.

Not to be outdone by such splendor, the Specter of Old Favorites hovers over the Mercury Opera company, and its dynamic performances of "The Barber of Seville" (September 26 and 28) at the Greece Athena Performing Arts Center. Gerard Floriano conducts and John Davies directs Rossini's most popular comedic opera.

In October, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra kicks off its 2008-2009 season with classical standards and powerhouse pianist Andre Watts. Christopher Seaman will conduct weekend concerts (October 10-11) showcasing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 "Emperor" and Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 "New World," the same forceful masterpiece that the New York Philharmonic performed in North Korea in the spring. The RPO stitches a Russian theme into the season with Borodin's Symphony No. 2 on October 31 and November 1, plus music by Shostakovich, Mussorgsky, and Tchaikovsky to come later. During Halloween weekend performances, RPO concertmaster Juliana Athayde performs the solo in Brahms' Violin Concerto, a tricky, profound work.

Other highlights of the fall season include a solo piano concert on December 2, when the Eastman School presents pianist Stephen Hough, an English-born Australian who's written about sexuality, music, and prayer. He'll perform pieces by Faure, Franck, and Chopin in Kilbourn Hall.

Henry James' gothic tale "The Turn of the Screw" sparked numerous film versions and even a short story by Joyce Carol Oates telling the tale from the ghosts' point of view. Benjamin Britten's operatic version offers the most complex and interesting matrix of musical ideas. You have the chance to see "The Turn of the Screw" performed by Eastman Opera Theatre November 6-9. You may be left to wonder if the ghosts are real or figments of the governess's imagination.
