The saying goes that everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it. The question is, why bother complaining? We live in Rochester. We know what we're getting into every winter. And grousing about it won't change anything.
So yes, winter is cold. Winter is snowy. Winter is exhausting. But it also affords us opportunities we don't have at any other time in the year. You can't go ice skating in June (at least, not outside). You can't go sledding in August. You can order a hot chocolate whenever you want, but damned if it doesn't taste better when its steam is thawing the frost molecules covering your face.
City's Winter Guide can't tell you everything to do over the next few months, but it's a start. This year we're focusing on snowshoeing, a sport so easy that author Kris Dreesen and her sources argue that anybody who can walk can master it. If you're more of an indoors sort, take the opportunity to introduce your sheltered kids to the wonders of science. And if you're going nuts from cabin fever, check out our listings of upcoming sports, recreation, and special events.
If you still feel like complaining about the weather, remember that in just a few weeks, the sun will be back, the snow will melt, and you'll have to wait a whole year to really enjoy the benefits of that perfect cup of cocoa.
