FALL GUIDE 2009

Thank goodness summer is over. It's not that we're glad to see the sun, the beaches, or the long days go away. But because there are so many exciting things happening in Rochester this fall, we could hardly wait for it to start.

This is truly a historic time for the Rochester arts scene. In the next month we'll see a prominent local theater group relocate to its new space. We'll see the re-opening of the massively renovated Nazareth Arts Center, which has been completely overhauled so that its physical structure better reflects its growing reputation as one of Western New York's premier spaces for dance and theater arts. And the Eastman Theatre, arguably the crown jewel of our local performance venues, will show off the first phase of its massive makeover, transforming into the Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre in the process. Check the story on page 14 of the regular issue for all the details.

Beyond that, it's a fall loaded with major concerts, art exhibits, theater productions, and more. Inside Fall Guide you'll find City Newspaper's cultural critics offering their opinions on the must-see shows of the season. Of course, there is plenty to do outside too, so check our beginner's guide to experiencing fall foliage, and consult the special events calendar for tons of seasonal activities to keep you busy. The days may be shorter come autumn, but with a schedule like this they'll be no less packed.

FALL GUIDE 09: Introduction

I'm so thrilled summer is over. Not because I'm glad to see the sun, the beaches, or the long days go away. But because there are so many exciting things happening in Rochester this fall, I could hardly wait for it to start.   This is...

FALL GUIDE '09: THEATER: Critic's picks

Fall signifies beginnings in classrooms and on stages. So, like a lot of people, maybe more than most, I'm always eager for the first curtain to rise. When I read the press releases from Rochester's different theaters, though, the first thing I...

FALL GUIDE '09: ART: Critic's picks

So, Gauguin pretty much summed up human experience when he titled that painting "Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going?" It's all we've ever wondered, and we'll spend eternity looking for those elusive (or nonexistent) answers....

FALL GUIDE '09: DANCE: Critic's picks

If there's one dance event not to miss in Rochester this year, it's the world premiere of the latest piece by Garth Fagan Dance (454-3260, garthfagandance.org) at the unveiling of the $10 million Nazareth Arts Center on Saturday, September 26....

FALL GUIDE '09: CLASSICAL: Critic's picks

You'd have to dig deep into the history books to find a season like this one. In the coming months, the unveiling of two massively renovated concert halls will coincide with a startling venue change for Rochester's premier early music series....

FALL GUIDE '09: MUSIC: Critic's picks

It would be nearly impossible to list all of the incredible concerts coming here this fall. No matter what kind of music you're into, there are some seriously amazing acts coming to town over the next few months. As City Newspaper's music writer,...

FALL GUIDE '09: MOVIES: Film preview

Summer is over, which means it's time to pack away your beer-can helmet and dust off the ol' thinking cap. You know the drill: Hollywood sits on its primo stuff until the leaves turn, hoping to circumvent the apparently short attention spans of...

FALL GUIDE '09: OUTDOORS: Fall foliage

Despite this year's damp summer we still had plenty of heat to enjoy (or endure). As I write this the temperatures are just starting to dip below that 70 degree mark that has been spoiling us the past few months, and very soon we'll be back to...
