WINTER GUIDE 2010

Illustration to Peter Lazarski.

This past weekend I took my nieces and nephew sledding at Harris Whalen Park in Penfield. As I whipped down the hill, trying to keep my 3-year-old toboggan companion from flying off after hitting a particularly robust bump at the bottom, I couldn't help but think that for all of my complaining, winter is actually pretty awesome. Yeah, the cold sucks. I hate digging my car out of the snow and ice. Knit caps totally mess up my bangs. But winter affords us thrills that we simply can't find any other time of year.

Take sledding, for instance. In addition to the Whalen hill, we're blessed with dozens of quality sledding spots in and around Rochester. Intrepid sledder Spencer Christiano put his butt on the line - literally - rating some of the better-known sledding slopes in the area. Did your favorite make the list?

If all the whites and grays of the season are getting you down, escape into some bastions of nature that dot the Rochester landscape. Rebecca Rafferty has put together a neat list of urban oases that are sure to alleviate anyone's winter blues - at least temporarily.

Of course, there's no shame in using winter as an excuse to essentially hibernate for the next three months. If you choose couch surfing as your primary cold-weather activity, Dayna Papaleo has a list of quality TV shows on DVD that you can take the opportunity to catch up on. By the time you've wrapped the final season of "The Wire" spring should be just around the corner.

If you're looking for something to do, we have a list of Cold Rush events, a sampling of some of the important arts and cultural goings-on over the next three months. For more, be sure to check the online events calendar on this website.

BY SPENCER CHRISTIANO Ah, sledding. A childhood joy of yesteryear, and a cherished pastime of the present. It almost seems odd that sledding is even still accepted in our overprotected culture. What could bring more fear to a parent's heart...

NATURE: Urban oases

While Western New York lucked out in both the lack-of-natural-disasters and abundance-of-lakes lotteries, we pay for it in long months of harsh winter. Some of us head to warmer climates for vacations. Some of us fight off the urge to...

INDOORS: Great TV on DVD

Maybe you're one of those people who adore winter and all the snow-kissed merriment that it promises. If so, go suck a ski. I'd like to speak to the true Rochesterians, the ones who keep themselves warm by complaining about the low temperatures...
