JAZZ FEST 08: Welcome to the Jazz Fest
By Frank De Blase on Apr. 9th, 2008
The festival has expanded into another venue - Christ Church on East Avenue, bringing the list to more than a dozen - and has filled those stages with arguably the most diversified line-up yet.
Other singers booked for the festival include ex-Rochesterian Robin McKelle, Tierney Sutton, and Catherine Russell. Look for more Nordic acts, including Kristian Blak & Yggdrasil, Wildbird & Peacedrums, and Beady Belle, plus contemporary jazz monsters like Joe Locke, The Bad Plus, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Supergenerous.
The Big Easy will get in a few licks with the ballsy brass of The Soul Rebels, the Technicolor Mardi Gras Indian parade that is The Wild Magnolias, The Blue Vipers Of Brooklyn, and Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers. Reggae fans will appreciate the one-two punch of legendary Jamaican groups Third World and The Skatellites.
Blues comes courtesy of The Nighthawks and their Canadian revivalist brothers Downchild Blues Band, plus Austin powerhouse Carolyn Wonderland, Saturday Night Fish Fry (which turns Dylan tunes blue), and one of the new generation of guitar monsters, Joe Bonamassa.
And there'll be rock 'n' roll too, with acts like Boz Skaggs, The Kentucky Headhunters, and Cross Canadian Ragweed.
Aside from the headliners, City recommends checking out big band trumpeter and band leader Todd Londigan's Quartet (Londigan is good-looking, suave, and sings a little like Chet Baker); ex-Monk drummer Ben Riley's tribute to Thelonious Monk; soul singer Stephanie McKay; the pairing of guitarist Kevin Breit and polyrhythmic Brazilian Cyro Baptista; and Billy's Band from Russia, which interprets Tom Waits tunes in Russian and English.
Club Passes are on sale now, and grant access to more than 140 shows (the headlining acts at Eastman Theatre are ticketed separately through Ticketmaster). They cost $125 until June 13, and then the price increases to $135. Tickets for individual shows will be available for $20-$25. All outdoor stage shows are free.
