I know, I know - pop and country. You hear those words and you think of all that saccharine pus just oozing out of Nashvegas. But there's salvation living in Dallas, and that salvation is coming here. Rhett Miller, the Old 97's front man and principal songwriter, writes wonderful tunes that blend classic transistor radio-era pop hooks into country, and leaves the country intact. Picture Jim Reeves' countrypolitan heartache with a little Replacements self-deprecation and despair, and then give it to a band that lets fly with up-tempo thunder and twang and you have it about right.
