On its first two albums, Between The Buried And Me trafficked in an eye-poppingly technical death metal/hardcore hybrid. But, as stimulating as it was to listen to the North Carolina quintet change frantically from part to part to part, that approach had already been worn thin by scores of other bands. Then BTBAM got hit by a lightning bolt of artistic inspiration for its 2007 album, "Colors." With its emphasis on keyboards and peculiar blend of traditional and extreme heavy metal with melody, "Colors" looked on paper like an ungainly, pretentious mess and could easily have ended the band's career. Instead, BTBAM somehow pulled all its inspirations together for one of the most brilliantly imaginative - and strangely coherent - metal albums of the decade.
The band plays Tuesday, October 7, 8 p.m. at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St. $20-$25. 325-5600

As a metalhead who survived the 80's, Between the Buried and Me is the sort of band I always hoped would be possible. No one is heavier than they are and yet they switch effortlessly from death metal to progressive metal to bluegrass to folk tunes to jazz back to death metal in the blink of a 15 minute song. These guys are amazing... and Colors doesn't have a weak moment, let alone song.
