ROCK: Cavalcade (9/5)

After first hearing Cavalcade's early demos and seeing the band live, it seemed like there wasn't a lot of room left to explore without losing listeners in the wake of the impending weirdness. You see, a band can get out there just so far before listeners start looking at each other. I like when that happens, and was willing to give Cavalcade some latitude. But on the new CD "It's Flooding In Here," the band has actually discovered a few additional floors before hitting the roof. There are hard edges, severe dynamics, and soft passages - simultaneously fragile and strong. It's different, and plays out in a stream-of-conscious kind of way, leaving the listener feeling like a bit of a mind-reader.
