If you follow local rock, chances are you're familiar with the sight of John Chajka cheerfully, sweatily attacking the bass in the Grinders. After all this time, Chajka's agreeable presence has become too easy to take for granted. But as the leader of the recently formed Clockmen, Chajka not only comes out swinging, he also bares new sides to his personality and playing - namely his soul and a sharp set of fangs. Like the Grinders, Clockmen is a trio that sticks close to Chajka's fast-loose-loud punk rock comfort zone. But the band turns the angst up several notches for a darker, more serious sound, and expands well beyond the familiar three-chord premise.
The Clockmen play Saturday, September 20, 9 p.m. at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Ave. $6. 454-2966.
