When a band's music occupies or creates a dreamscape, the pendulum swings between idyllic and nightmarish. But not all dreams have the sleeping protagonist winning the lottery or running from Leatherface. In fact, most nocturnal ruminations are pleasant non-sequitur juxtapositions of the impossible and weird, where nothing really cataclysmic ever happens. Hinkley is the soundtrack to these non-denominational dreams. Formed in 2000, this Rochester octet balances mellow and spirited tones and lyrics; it is melancholy with a sparkle, pop with tears - though kept dry under the indie-rock umbrella. It's as if Hinkley has created its own mood.
