ROCK: MDG and the No Clones (10/11)

After two decades of blazing a unique trail with his own brand of quirky progressive pop, local singer/songwriter Matt Guarnere finally feels comfortable playing in a tribute band. But don't get the wrong idea; the No Clones isn't your average tribute. Yes, the band plays Cheap Trick songs, but the band members - Guarnere, Billy and Brian Eberts from the Meddling Kids, and guitarist Dave Carroll - are all avid fans. Bassist Brian Eberts even plays Tom Petersson's trademark 12-string bass to recapture that full, classic Cheap Trick sound. But they're not trying to be the band, with costumes or any such silliness. With the No Clones, it's all about the music - and they play it all in its original key (no small feat when it comes to the vocals).

MDG and the No Clones, with The Meddling Kids, play Saturday, October 11, 9:30 p.m., at High Fidelity, 170 East Ave. $5. 325-6490.
