HIP-HOP: Nas (1/23)

When rapper Nasir Jones muses about our new commander-in-chief on "Black President," he doesn't pull punches. Nas taps into the back of our minds, hopeful but cautious: "When [Obama] wins will he really care still?" Uncomfortable declarations fill Nas's ninth, untitled studio album, originally set to be called "Nigger" before a predictable torrent of protest changed that. Still, Nas is the only star combining trunk-grinding hooks, fluent, unfaltering rhymes, and socially provocative subject matter on a national level, with the charming persona of a perpetual underdog from the Queensbridge projects. Nas doesn't rap about bling, he deconstructs it. But with a flow so seasoned, it all seems effortless.

Nas performs with The Knux Friday, January 23, 8 p.m., at Gordon Field House, RIT. $17-$41. 232-1900.
