Beyond the fresh-squeezed sweat and testosterone, beyond the accelerated volume and teenage antics often lies what a band will become. There's no substitute for a band's drive, hard work, and a little luck to get where it needs to be. And even if it ain't there yet, there's still a kick watching the gestation and determination. Water Street Music Hall's high school battle of the bands is not only an opportunity for these bands to form, play to a big crowd, and either live or die. It's also a chance for music fans who want to go beyond the polish and perfection and see something that's genuine and honest in all its raw, ragged, unpretentious, unassuming glory. This is rock 'n' roll with nothing to lose.
