BLUES: Johnny Winter (3/7)

Johnny Winter is the whitest guy to ever play the blackest blues. He is probably the greatest living blues guitar player alive. Though slowed a little by hip replacement and forced to play sitting down in the last few years, the 65-year-old legend's playing is as sharp and slippery as ever. And sure, we all rave about his six-string prowess, but the man can sing too. It's a throaty growl full of soul. Winter's unmistakable tone and fluid style was and is the launch pad for most contemporary electric blues players as well as rockers who know better than to stray too far from the jungle. Winter himself has never really bothered making the distinction between the two, and neither should you. And for those of you disappointed with those little stick guitars he's adopted in later years, stick around; he breaks out the Firebird for the finale.
