ROCK/COMEDY: Matt Griffo (3/28)

The connection between comedy and music is a natural one. Though it might seem like Weird Al Yankovich (or more recently, Zach Galifianakis) enjoys a corner on the market for funnyman songs, the truth is people have been sharing bawdy ditties at least since the ancient Greeks. So it's a puzzle why the two don't overlap more - and that's something Rochester native Matt Griffo is trying to fix. Curating this night at the Penny, the Second City-trained Griffo uses a piano and ukulele as the musical straight men to his punny, comedic punchlines. In his tune "The Gays," Griffo does for homosexuals what Sandler's "The Chanukah Song" did for Jews: provide a caricature-laden rallying cry that's so subtle in its satiric intent that its subversiveness just might get overlooked. Also look for performances by The Pushrods and Clearly From Negligence, a band that manages to sound like college-rock vets while only being in middle and high school.
