FUNK/JAM: Pia Mater (4/15)

The pia mater is the delicate, innermost layer of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, so it's perhaps fitting that the Rochester-based band named after that part of the anatomy plays cerebral music that stirs thoughts and senses. The foursome came together in 2004 after meeting at RIT and developed a style that melds funk, prog, and heavy improv. In late 2008, the band recorded and released its debut album, "The Living Legends," and it has been feverishly traversing the upstate New York club circuit in an effort to stimulate as many minds (and perhaps other body parts) as possible.
