COUNTRY: Jamey Johnson (5/11)

"Between Jennings and Jones," the last track on Jamey Johnson's CD "That Lonesome Song" pretty much says it all. Although he first made his name as a songwriter - he's already claimed two Academy of Country Music Song of the Year nods - Johnson is quickly emerging as one of the freshest, grittiest, and most revelatory artists on the modern country landscape. Not only do Johnson's CDs fall in between Jennings and Jones (that's Waylon and George, respectively) in record stores, but his music represents a modern incarnation of the type of ballsy, take-me-as-I-am music produced by those two country legends. Many fans and critics have even used the term "maverick" - a concept Jennings literally created and defined for four decades - when describing Johnson and his rapidly building impact on the moribund country scene.
