If there is a more gorgeous piece of music for jazz orchestra than Dave Rivello's "Sometime," I haven't heard it. Rivello's 12-piece ensemble has just released its first studio CD, "Facing The Mirror," and it is stunning from start to finish. Rivello's compositions and charts rival any being written today; his Eastman New Jazz Ensemble just won Down Beat magazine's Best College Big Band award. Mike Kaupa's sublime trumpet solo on "Sometime" is indicative of the level of musicianship throughout the album. In his liner notes, great arranger Bob Brookmeyer calls Rivello "someone I believe belongs in the next generation of large jazz ensemble composers." Thursday's performance is a CD-release celebration.
The Dave Rivello Ensemble plays Thursday, June 11, 9 p.m. at Village Rock Café, 213 Main St, East Rochester. Free. 586-1640.

If you think the studio recording is good, the live version as I recorded it for the 2008 RIJF is miles ahead if it. FYI.
