Easily a contender for Greatest Band Name Ever, this sextet hails from Tampa, one of death metal's earliest hubs. S.W.W.A.A.T.S., which stands for Success Will Write Apocalypse Across The Sky (a William Burroughs reference), features guitarists from the now-defunct likeminded outfit Bodies In The Gears Of The Apparatus, and clearly has a way with words. The band's grim, paranoiac lyrics obviously took brains to put together; they're also fun to read along to as the frenzied, hyper-stimulating music renders them completely unintelligible. Along with producer (and death metal legend) James Murphy, S.W.W.A.A.T.S. by its own description tries to make the harshest, ugliest music possible. To the band's credit, it succeeds - so well, in fact, that its clever atmospheric touches take several listens to recognize. With Goatwhore, Daath, Abysmal Dawn, and more.
S.W.W.A.A.T.S. performs Tuesday, July 28, 7 p.m. at the Penny Arcade, 4785 Lake Ave. $12. 267-5576.
