Any band that mixes dub reggae with heavily distorted guitars has to navigate a minefield of clichés, but Dub Trio somehow manages to avoid them all. Essentially, Dub Trio switches between dub grooves and heavy rock that borders on metal. It's a fairly straightforward, back-and-forth formula, but the band's stellar musicianship, confident attack, and impeccable sense of balance contribute to an invigorating sound. In person, Dub Trio's wall of thick tones comes across as vibrant and forceful. Local fans may remember the way drummer Joe Tomino tore up our coffee shops as a member of the futurist underground jazz outfit Birth. Thankfully, Tomino restrains his hyperkinetic style in Dub Trio, a welcome antidote to headliner Matisyahu's novelty appeal.
