OLDIES: The Grass Roots feat. Rob Grill (8/5)

By Ryan Whirty on July 29, 2009

For roughly a decade in the late 60's and early 70's, the L.A.-based Grass Roots were one of the most dependable and accessible pop-rock bands on the charts, turning out jangly, hook-laden, and surprisingly complex hits like "Midnight Confessions" and "Temptation Eyes." The Grass Roots provided many rock fans - turned off by the grimy chauvinism of the Stones and Zeppelin, the trippy experiments of the Beatles, and the operatic bombast of The Who - with a grooving, thoughtful, romantic alternative. At the center of the band was bassist and singer Rob Grill, who still fronts the group to this day as it makes its rounds on the classic-rock and oldies circuits.
