R&B: Jamie Foxx (8/9)

When all is said and done, singer/actor/comedian Jamie Foxx will probably be remembered most for his Oscar-winning portrayal of soul icon Ray Charles. In his own music career, however, Foxx has his sights set squarely on keeping up with today's R&B pack. Which, depending how you look at it, is either a shame or yet another example of his staggering versatility. Foxx isn't exactly short on nerve: from talking bluntly about race at a George Strait tribute (he's an avid country fan) to doing a moonwalk parody at BET's Michael Jackson tribute, it's no surprise that his lyrics have some bite. But, as he might put it himself, the music is slicker than a KY delivery truck accident on a rainy day. Predictable auto-tuned vocals and the usual rapper guest spots probably say more about Foxx's marketing savvy than his musical ability. And, well, there's something to be said for that.
