CLASSICAL: Sphinx Chamber Orchestra (9/29)

The Sphinx Chamber Orchestra comprises present and past winners of the nationwide Sphinx Competition for string players, and is replete with black and Latino virtuosi, faces grossly under-represented in the ranks of most orchestras. In diversifying the rosters of our orchestras with their inspiring young players, the Sphinx Organization hopes to see diverse new faces among those who attend classical music performances as well. In doing so, their goal is to make classical music a form of entertainment for all, not just a select few. It seems as though Sphinx may hold the key to classical music's constant battle against its dying audiences and country club image. Bravo. The program features the works of composers ranging from W. A. Mozart to W. L. Marsalis. Sphinx Chamber Orchestra performs Tuesday, September 29, 8 p.m. at Kilbourn Hall, 26 Gibbs St. $10-$20. 454-2100, esm.rochester.edu.
