Centuries after the end of her reign, Elizabeth I remains a fascinating subject for modern scholars and audiences alike. Her years at the head of English empire are often referred to as the "golden age," and although it was a period of intense conflict and upheaval, it was also a time of amazing accomplishments in the arts and culture. Pegasus Early Music celebrates some of the musical works created under Liz's watch with "Tears and Triumphs: Music for the Virgin Queen," a concert featuring soprano Laura Heimes (pictured) and a consort of viols and lute performing works by John Dowland, William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, and Anthony Holborne.

The concert takes place Sunday, October 25, 4 p.m. at Downtown United Presbyterian Church, 121 N Fitzhugh St. $15-$55. 703-3990, pegasusearlymusic.org.
