CLASSICAL: Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (10/8-11)

By Elena O'Connor on October 7, 2009

After months of anticipation, the Eastman Theatre will reopen this week as - wait for it - Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre. Besides its new name, the theater boasts a new lobby and new acoustics, but maintains its beloved Renaissance-style interior even with the addition of box seating. The RPO, along with the Rochester Oratorio Society, will anoint the theater's reopening with the season's inaugural concert featuring Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, complete with its "Ode to Joy," a robust and familiar anthem: the perfect salute to the rebirth of a theater with a magnificent past and a glorious future. Also on the program is the world premiere of "Geo," a new piece composed by Eastman School of Music Dean Douglas Lowry, inspired by the life story of the man who inspired the theater, George Eastman.
