Historically speaking, the big band era occurred in the 1930's and 1940's. But try telling that to arrangers like Maria Schneider, Dave Rivello, and Wynton Marsalis, who have all breathed new life into the genre. Rivello may not have the name recognition of the other two, but his music is no less adventurous, ambitious, or beautiful. Bob Brookmeyer, one of the greatest arrangers in jazz history, has said Rivello is "someone I believe belongs in the next generation of large jazz ensemble composers." One listen to Rivello's new CD, "Facing The Mirror," should be enough to convince you. But a far better option is to experience the band live. Rivello and his 12-piece ensemble headline Jazz Day at SUNY Brockport with a concert, symposium, and master class.
The Dave Rivello Ensemble plays Friday, October 30, 7:30 p.m. at Tower Fine Arts Center, 180 Holley St, Brockport. $8-$30. 395-2797.
