Though the cello has been making memorable appearances in rock music for decades, it's still widely regarded in rock circles as a "special guest" support instrument. Cellist Alison Chesley, who plays under the name Helen Money, shatters that notion with her edgy solo act. Working with an array of effects pedals, Chesley takes an amplified, in-your-face approach traditionally associated with flashy lead guitar players. On her new album, "In Tune," Chesley makes it clear that she isn't afraid of being loud, abrasive, or gloomy, but also that there's much more to her music than the attack. Chesley has recorded with Anthrax, Disturbed, Bob Mould, Russian Circles, and Mono, which makes perfect sense once you hear the dense palette of sounds she wrings from her instrument. And ya gotta love the timing of her cover of the Minutemen's "Political Song Michael Jackson Should Sing."
Helen Money performs Saturday, November 7, 7 p.m. at Boulder Coffee, 100 Alexander St. $5. 454-7140.
