R & B: Jeffrey Osborne (11/15)

Originally the drummer for the classic 70's R&B outfit L.T.D. until he was called up to sing lead, Jeffrey Osborne had already put his baritone signature on a string of hits by the time he went solo in the early 80's. Much like, say, Lionel Richie, Osborne successfully navigated R&B's transition from rich, funky arrangements to glossy pop. He and his peers represent the gold standard for the smooth, pillow-talking ladies' man persona that would eventually get worn into the ground by their followers. Today, Osborne's voice cuts through the vocoder-drenched radio waves like a warm breeze. Whatever the merits of contemporary soul crooners, Osborne reminds us of a time when R&B was a dignified, unassailable artform. Proceeds benefit local non-profit Wilson Commencement Park.

Jeffrey Osborne plays Sunday, November 15, at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, 26 Gibbs St. 7 p.m. $25-$85. 263-7938.
