ROCK: Sponge (11/20)

When Detroit's Sponge hit the scene in 1994, singer Vinnie Dombroski reminded me a lot of The Psychedelic Furs' Richard Butler: bluesy, apocalyptic, and cool. Put together from the remnants of Loudhouse in 1991, Sponge exploded in 1995 with its Columbia album "Rotting Pinata," which included the hits "Plowed" - with it's memorable "in a world of human wreckage" chorus - and "Molly" - with its equally memorable "Sixteen candles down the drain" refrain. The band has been in constant line-up flux, with Dombroski the only constant along with the music. The band's latest EP "Hits and B-Sides" is out now. Junction 5, Fringe City, Endever, and Ana May also play.
