ALTERNATIVE: Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams (1/23)

Despite the name, this group is neither affiliated with "Lord of the Rings" nor a circus from Slambovia. However, Gandalf Murphy and Co. take traditional folk instruments, toss in some electric guitar, and by summoning the influence of acts ranging from Bob Dylan to Hank Williams and even Pink Floyd, create a sound that frontman Joziah Longo describes as "punk-classical-hillbilly-Floyd." If it sounds strange, that's because it is, but it makes sense when you know that Longo has performed at the legendary punk venue CBGB's, as well as Carnegie Hall.  Drawing inspiration from the individual members' musical backgrounds helps keep the Circus' sound fresh and different and the band's live shows entertaining and memorable.

Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams plays Saturday, January 23, 8 p.m. at Smith Opera House, 82 Seneca St, Geneva. $15. 315-781-5483.

This show at The Smith is the band's last show stateside before a monday trip to the U.K. where they are spreading their contagious brand of quirky Americana from Glasgow to Penzance. Playing an utterly unique blend of art school roots rock, sometimes folk with 60's inspired sensibilities, they possess an exotic instrumental arsenal (accordion, cello, mandolin, glockenspiel, theremin) in addition to standard rock regalia. Equal parts Washington Irving and Woodstock, the band taps a broad palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems. Having honed their skills along New York's Hudson river and abroad for the past ten years, the band was voted “BEST CONCERT OF THE YEAR” by Creative Loafing and as Hudson Valley's 'Best Band', they have been called "the hillbilly Pink Floyd," which is an apt description, particularly if you throw in elements of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, The Band, Dylan, and maybe even some Frank Zappa as well. If you are wondering where Slambovia is or where the Circus of Dreams came from, Joziah Longo (lead singer/songwriter) says it all began to take form during long walks in the woods of Sleepy Hollow, during one of the darkest times of his life. "This band and the music which began to emerge with it was an inspiration to me, that's where it all began - the concept of a place to call 'home', my own country as it were, which no one could ever take away from me was a big part of the birth of The Circus." Perhaps there's something in the water along the Hudson river where the band makes it's home - Longo, known for his tall tales and tongue-in-cheek philosophizing, just this week put the finishing touches on a musical of 'Aesop's Fables' which will be opening in New York City in 2010. As the band gears up for their U.K. tour, the last stop will be at The Smith on saturday night. Known for electrifying live performances, a heartwarming down-to-earth connection to audiences, and great original music, 'A Splendid Time Is Guaranteed For All!'.
